Re: giving a chance

Hello Thais,

Firstly, welcome to Virtual Tourist. I'm sorry that I can't reply to your question, but you should really place it in the Miscellaneous Forum. The travel forum is for travel-related questions, and not intended for questions such as your own. Please place your question there, as this one might be removed by the VT Staff shortly. Regards

Re: giving a chance

There are immigration quotas for every country....nothing else would make much sense. Are there long lines to get into some other places, too? I think this country has great opportunities, and that's why so many want to live here. I wish we could take more.. that's why our country became what it is now.

Welcome to VT!

The simple answer to your question is that there are too many people applying everyday to come to this country. It is not possible for everyone to be accepted.

People from other countries recieve "green cards" everyday to live and work in the USA legally.

There is a "priority" list that has first consideration. If you qualify from that list; husband/wife of a US citizen, parent or sibling of a US citizen, political exiles in danger, and people with special skills you may still have as much as a six month wait before getting the "green card."

Hope you enjoy VT,
Linda

Hi Palo,

Possibley this person wants to go to SLC and in filling out the form to join VT made a mistake. It's difficult enough sometimes to do these things when it's in one's own language, it must be even more so in a language not one's own.

Have a good day,
Linda

Travel Tips for Salt Lake City

Visit the Utah State Capitol. ...

by worldtrekker

Visit the Utah State Capitol. This impressive structure (modeled after the national Capitol in Washington D.C.) stands at the north end of State St on Capitol Hill. It's a worthwhile walk up here. Inside, the rooms are spacious and elegant and lined with huge columns. The walls are covered with murals of Utah's history. The beautifully landscaped gardens contain some historical monuments. Look for a stairway behind the Mormon Battalion Monument on the southeast side leading to Memory Grove, where statues honor Utah veterans. The Grove, a part of City Creek Canyon, is a favorite spot for local walkers, runners, and bicyclists. Photo: Taken from a neighborhood known as the Avenues. Between the trees and the capitol is Memory Grove and City Creek Canyon. March '97

Winter Olympics 2002

by grandmaR

When I arrived in Salt Lake, another traveler commented to me that the airport was going to be a giant mega-bottleneck during the Olympics because it was so inefficiently managed. They couldn't even tell us which carousel our luggage would arrive on.

We only got to see the 2002 Winter Olympics on TV, so that didn't worry me too much. Bob was recovering from his heart attack, and it was an interesting thing to watch at that time. KEY FACTS

Opening date:
08 February 2002 (the day that Bob had his angioplasty)

Closing date:
24 February 2002

Country of the host city:
United States of America (USA)

Candidate cities:
Östersund (SWE), Quebec (CAN) and Sion (SUI)

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen earned gold medals in all four biathlon events and Samppa Lajunen in all three Nordic combined competitions. Alpine skier Janica Kostelic won three gold medals and one silver. Simon Ammann scored unexpected victories in both individual ski jump events. Speedskater Claudia Pechstein earned her third straight gold medal in the 5,000m race and also won at 3,000m. By taking the silver medal in singles luge, Georg Hackl became the first person in Olympic history to earn a medal in the same individual event five times in a row. Short track speedskater Yang Yang (A) became the first Chinese athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Games. TRAX

by grandmaR

The TRAX light rail had a stop right in front of our hotel. On the top of the kiosk between the tracks were bird sculptures which I thought were interested. We didn't have a chance to ride the 15-mile line down to 10000 South in Sandy (South Salt Lake Valley). It might have been an interesting way to see Salt Lake. When I was here before I took some photos from the hotel window of the buses, but I was too busy to do that either even though the hotel told me that the downtown was a fare free zone with no charge if you enter and exit in that zone.

You can find out the routes and fares at the URL below

Kampai Sushi

by brewjohnson about Kampai Sushi

This restaurant has special rooms where you can accomodate large groups. The staff is also very accomodating. We simply told the waiter that we wanted a wide selection of food, and they did a great job in letting us sample a little bit of everything. They also keep the Saki and Sapporo coming!!! we tried just about everything and all of it was delicious.

One of the Visitor's Centers

by grandmaR

AAA gives the Visitor's Center a red star - one of 5 red starred attractions in Salt Lake. The north west corner has the Old and New Testament murals and a Christus. The south east corner one has a 30 minute presentation of the Book of Mormons (on requrest). Free

I don't think I made much of a visit to the Visitor's Centers.
