Hilton Garden Inn: Wonderful and comfortable!
Although, this hotel is not located in Salt Lake City, its still in a great location as far as restaurants, movie theatres and stores. Heck, the mall is right on the next block south of the hotel and a Greatland Target is just located just a block North of it. Restaurants are all right next to it. So driving was never required, which suits me fine. Yet, Lawton is not far at all from Salt Lake City and this hotel is really nice. I enjoyed my stay here.
The facilities are really nice and I was impressed with them. Guestroom offers one king or two queen or two double beds, hospitality center, high speed Internet access (excellent), large business desk, iron/ironing board, hair dryer, coffeemaker, refrigerator, microwave, two line phones and voicemail. The exercise room was excellent and the indoor pool was very nice. They do have small outside patio just outside the pool area which was nice. A huge conference center. The little bar inside is very cozy! The restaurant services a killer breakfast too!

There are several furnished apartments available in the downtown area. If you are coming for skiing, there are condos that can be rented out. Also, they have the standard hotel chains.
If you shop around on the internet, you can find some good accomadations. Especially, if you book in advance.

The Avenues Hostel: The Avenues Hostel
This hostel draws an international crowd. I guess LDS sights are a big and fascinating draw for European backpackers. I met some cool people here;, the owner, Jim, is an interesting guy who can converse on many topics, from traveling in Iceland to why Dusty Baker is one of the most underrated managers in baseball. The hostel, a ten minute walk from all the major LDS sights, is a friendly, welcoming place to base your SLC exploration from.

Saltair Bed and Breakfast...
Saltair Bed and Breakfast Inn
The Saltair Bed and Breakfast experience is memorable. The rates are affordable. The most luxurious room with a private bath is still within your budget of just over $100. Salt Lake City, UT is the perfect spot for anyone from honeymooners to busy executives to road-weary travelers. Saltair Bed and Breakfast is the oldest continuously operating Bed and Breakfast in Utah and the house has hosted many dignitaries.

University Guest House: Just of the trax
Spent five nights here while attending a conference. While it is not downtown, it is just off the "trax" the public rail system. Also frequent campus buses go right by the hotel. Price was reasonable, people friendly. Great view of the valley and out to the lake.

Comfort Inn Sandy: Convenient location
I'll admit it... I was not thrilled at the thought of staying at a Comfort Inn (and I was called a snob for it), but overall the hotel was a good choice for what we needed. We ended up getting a "suite" with one king bed and a pull out couch for under $80/night and it was conveniently located right near the freeway with easy access to everything we needed so I cannot complain. The staff was very helpful and kind and the hotel obviously has good upkeep. In fact, while we were there there was constantly someone cleaning, repairing or fixing something up (not in an annoying or inconvenient fashion I might add). The room was spacious and clean, as well as the rest of the hotel. There was a pretty nice continental breakfast downstairs every morning that always seemed to be packed with people. Every room came with a VCR (do they even make those anymore? LOL) and rental movies were available for a dollar at the front desk. Normally, I wouldn't find this impressive, but with visiting children it was nice! There is a pool as well that was decent, we spent some time in there and it was acceptable.
On a side note: If you are traveling with pets this location allows all kinds and on the flip side if you are allergic to dogs, etc you may want to avoid the hotel because there were dogs everywhere!
I did see some newer hotels in the same general area that I might like to try instead next time, but honestly I would have no problem staying at this Comfort Inn when we go back.
Very friendly and hard working staff, excellent rates!

TownePlace Suites, Marriott: Nice suite room on your way to Yellow Stone
This hotel is not in Salt Lake City, it's at Layton, UT. It's about half hour driving to the North of Salt Lake City. It's very close to the Antelope Island State Park which has the Great Salt Lake. It's also on your way from Salt Lake City to Yellow Stone National Park.
The suite is very nice. We have a suite with two bedrooms, one living room, kitchen and bathroom. Everything is very clean also.

Comfort Suites - Sandy, UTAH: Loved the View -
We choose this hotel because it was close to the Doctors office - and it offered a microwave and fridge in the room along with an indoor pool to keep the kids entertained.
Not a super "wow" fancy-smancy place- but not a bad one either. We liked the room, sleep soundly in the beds, and didn't find anything to complain about.
The price was not bad either.
We stayed in a:
Standard Rate 2 Double Beds/No Smoking/Sofa Bed/Fridge/Microwave/, Indoor heated pool, hot tub, Deluxe Continental Breakfast, laundry service, for $67.49 a night plus tax when we stayed there.
Having never been in Utah before the mountain views were wonderful. But I bet you could see them from just about any hotel you stayed at in the Salt Lake City area.
