What Happened

by frankbuster

Is it true that all of the responsible parties/entities that could have saved Antelope Island, etc., did nothing?
They didn't cut a drainage canal at the North end to let the water drain out onto the Bonneville Flats?
Please tell me that someone tried to do something.

Where did you read that something happened to Antelope Island?

Bill

Re: What Happened

by frankbuster

It's so many years ago I don't know where I read, or saw, it. "They" said that the lake water level was rising, the causeway and Antelope Island were underwater. I don't recall mention of the railroad but I definitely wondered about it.
Is this all a bad dream on my part?

Re: What Happened

by bocmaxima

The Great Salt Lake flooded in the 80's, causing extensive flooding in neighborhoods on its southeast shore, closest to the city. But they established a pumping program to control it. Since there's no outflow, the lake's levels ebb and flow with the variable water levels that come in to it. There haven't been significant floods since though, so I don't really get it.
Antelope Island is open and has been open for a number of years though.

Re: What Happened

The State of Utah still thinks they have a park there - see
http://www.utah.com/stateparks/antelope_island.htm
and
http://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/antelope-island
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antelope_Island_State_Park
so I am thinking that the island is still intact...

Thank you kindly. That is the time and incident I'm talking about. I just didn't have the info correct. That seems to happen to me more frequently these days. :)

Travel Tips for Salt Lake City

In My Opinion...

by Jmill42

In my opinion, the best thing about this place is the close proximity of the many ski/board places. I had agreat time at all of the resorts, except The Canyons. Overpriced, snooty atmosphere, and super packed slopes = really bad time. When you leave the slopes early, not because you are tired, but because you are tired of all the people, you have offically gone to the wrong resort.

Cross Walk - can't be too safe....

by frankcanfly

This really made me laugh... if you read the sign, it says:

"........ for added visability, carry orange flag across (street) with you"

Yes, they expect that you'll pick up a flag, wave it as you cross the street, and return it to a container on the other side. I never saw anyone use this, but the intention is certainly pure.

I got some funny looks when I did it.

Drive through Logan Pass to Bear Lake

by 807Wheaton

After we left Salt Lake City we drove through dirty, hazy air up Interstate 15 to the exit for Logan. Right at this exit there was a gas station with unbelievably low prices for gas. After filling up our rental car we got on Highway 91/89 which took us to Logan. Here we took Highway 89 and entered Logan Canyon where we left the haze behind and started a lovely drive. Even on September 6th we were starting to see some color. The road itself is a heavily traveled road. The drive reminded us of the ride to Julian, in California. Sage and scrub junipers were on the hillside and we saw tall firs along the Logan River. The aspens were still green in this area. When leaving Logan Pass we encountered those dreaded words on a road trip "ROAD WORK AHEAD". We drove through seven miles of road work behind two big trucks before we got to Bear Lake.
WOW! The lake is a beautiful blue. The vista of the lake looks similar to the look of the Sea of Galilee. Quite often we saw signs advertising Raspberry Shakes. When we got to Garden City we stopped at a small woodcabin type eating place right on the lake called The Reserve to buy a shake. We had our sub sandwiches with us that we had purchased back in Salt Lake City so we used their picnic tables and had a picnic lunch overlooking the lake and then had a raspberry shake.

Salt Lake City is well served...

by Mark_Purdue

Salt Lake City is well served by an efficient airport.
Public transport is very good, both bus and the new light rail system are both inexpensive and efficient.
Car hire can be a little expensive but is necessary for the out lying tourist attractions.

Great Steaks

by Yaqui about Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon

This place was right around the corner practically where I was staying at. I ate here twice. I enjoyed the food and decor a lot! They have a huge selection and the waiters/waitresses are wonderful. I think you will enjoy eating here!

Lunch Menu

Dinner Menu Let's see.....I think I had steak again....lol! Another wonderful chain of restaurants to enjoy! I had the typical steak dinner with salad and potato. It was yummy ofcourse. I enjoyed the decor also. Cannot miss at this place.
