Travel Tips for Tropic

A few miles away from the center of Tropic (driving to Escalante) is a Scenic turnout i think just after you pass Mileage marker 18. Here you walk the Mossy Cave trail it's about 1 mile long so even when your not having that much time it's worth to stop and get some great photo's.

Tropic – tropical town in Bryce Valley

by vtveen

Tropic got its name from the more or less tropical climate in this part of Bryce valley. The area is rather green and has a lot of meadows with grazing cows and horses around. The town was founded in 1892 and settlers could only live here after digging the 15 miles long Tropic Ditch (if walking the trail to Mossy Caves you are walking along this man made ditch).
Tropic was home to Ebenezer Bryce (namesake of Bryce Canyon) and we did take a look at his cabin.

Tropic is a rather small village - about 400 people are living here - along Scenic Byway 12. Most of the important facilities for tourists are situated along or very close to the main road, like hotels/motels, restaurants, a pizzeria, some shops, supermarket, gas station and even a bank.
Bryce Road leads to a back entrance of Bryce Canyon National Park, where a trail to Sunset and Sunrise Point starts.

We stayed in Tropic for two nights and I think it is a very good and affordable alternative for your Bryce Canyon (and Kodachrome Basin SP) visit. At least we were very happy we didn’t stay in or around the ‘tourist trap’ of Ruby’s Inn.

Tropic is located 10 km’s east of Bryce Canyon NP along highway 12.

Tropic Utah in Spring Time

"Our visit to Tropic"

We visited Tropic to see the Bryce Canyon, but when we drove along the Scenic Byway 12 we decided to save the actual visit to Bryce Canyon for another trip.

Tropic is a real small village but you can do quit some things here, there are quads which you can rent.

"Some facts"

Tropic is part of Garfield County and it has about 400 inhabitants. The land area is about 1.271 square kilometers. There is not any water surface of significance. The distance to Salt Lake City (state capital) is 222 miles, but you have to fly for that distance.

"Just some pictures"

Tropic is a small town, near Bryce Canyon Located on Scenic Byway 12.
It has 2 or 3 restaurants and some stores, it's ideally located to visit the Bryce Canyon Area.

"Landscape changes"

The landscapes are very divers, around every bend in the road you discover something different.

"View from Pioneer Village"

This picture shows the mountain behind Pioneer Village

"Backside of the Cabins"

Here we enjoyed the evening sun...after the sun was gone it cooled of quickly.

"dead cats ?"

We stopped alongside the road to see the remains of a usually larger river. When we looked down we saw the kind of dead animals which are on this picture. We think it are some dead wild cats, if you know what they really are let us know.
