Travel Tips for Vernal

Vernal, Utah - My hometown

by doodles72

Vernal became my hometown ten years ago when I moved here for work purposes. I am originally from Bountiful, Utah - which is about 3 hrs. south of Vernal.

Vernal is the home of the Dinosaurland National Monument, and a yearly location of the national rodeos. Last year the city won the America in Blooms contest for all the beautiful flowers lining the streets and lamps. There's lots of bullriding, horseback riding, farming, fishing, hunting and lots of wonderful people!

"Dinosaur National Monument"

Dinosaur National Monument -The largest quarry of Jurassic Period dinosaur bones ever discovered is the source of 200,000-acre Dinosaur National Monument's name.
Over 2,000 dinosaur bones are exposed in the sandstone wall. Many complete skeletons have also been recovered and are exhibited in museums throughout the nation. Visitors can watch paleontologists chip away the sandstone to expose the fossilized dinosaur bones. Visitors can also see the preparation laboratory where dinosaur fossils are cleaned and preserved. This is the most productive Jurassic Period dinosaur quarry in the world, providing more complete skeletons, skulls, and bones of dinosaurs than any other quarry.

Dinosaur National Monument stretches east into Colorado. In both the Utah and Colorado portions there are mapped hikes through mountains, plateaus and deserts. Most of the established hiking trails in the monument are fairly short. Favorites include the Harpers Corner Trail, the Gates of Lodore Trail and the Red Rock Trail. Campgrounds are located near the visitor center. Dinosaur National Monument is also popular for white water rafting on the Green and Yampa Rivers.

"World famous fishing, boating and water fun"

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area was established by Congress October 1, 1968. The area contains 207,363 acres of land and water which are almost equally divided between Utah and Wyoming.

Rising 502 feet above bedrock, Flaming Gorge Dam impounds waters of the Green River to form Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which extends as far as 91 miles to the north.Petroglyphs (rock art) and artifacts suggest that Fremont Indians hunted game near Flaming Gorge for many centuries. Later, the Comanche, Shoshoni, and Ute tribes, whose members spread throughout the mountains of present-day Colorado and Utah, visited the Flaming Gorge country.
The Uintas includes a high, pristine mountain area in northeastern Utah that is popular for fishing, hiking, backpacking, horsepacking, hunting and other outdoor activities. Much of the area is designated as a roadless wilderness where vehicles are prohibited. A few roads, and a handful of rugged 4X4 tracks, provide access to areas outside the wilderness, and to trailheads
