"The Hope Cemetery"
A major attraction in this small Vermont city is the Hope Cemetery. The fine craftsmanship of Italian stone carvers who immigrated to Barre at the end of the 1800's and early 1900's is on display here. Barre is known as the granite capital of the world. Those who worked the quarries were often given a piece of granite as a perk. These workers would then have their tombstones carved often before they died. The workmanship is superb. The detailing in many of the designs is unbelievable. It is fully understood why this cemetery was featured in the PBS documentary A Cemetery Special, which hi-lited some very special cemeteries in the country.
