A solid choice... until compared with others

The Inn at Montpelier is set in two historics buildings not far from the town's main intersection of Main and State Streets.

This is a fine, slightly upscale, place to stay. Our appreciation of it was tempered somewhat by the fact we had to stay at two different B&Bs due to the lateness of our trip in the heart of Vermont's foliage season.

For starters, it was much more expensive than the other place (Betsy's Bed and Breakfast, also included in my tips). Also, despite the courtesy of all the employees, the place now accommodates so many guests it has lost the intimate feeling typically associated with a bed and breakfast. Unlike our previous B&B experiences, we did not feel as if we were lodging in someone's home, as the Inn looks feels more like a hotel. The breakfast was self-catering, another first for us in a B&B.

All in all, there is nothing actually wrong with the Inn at Montpelier: it's just that Betsy's Bed and Breakfast is both cheaper and cozier.
