Fantastic rolling green hills,...
Fantastic rolling green hills, just beautiful countryside for hikers, little shops and inns everywhere. Quechee Gorge was a great stop, with a little wine tasting shop nearby with all varieties of local fare.

Along our travels through Vermont we stopped off at Quechee Gorge. There are many spots around here to take some great photographs.
There are trails along the Quechee Gorge - this photo is a pathway down to the bottom of the gorge.

We are planning a family vacation to New England in late October but have no idea which area to stay in. We were thinking of Vermont and I would really appreciate some advice on where would be best to go. My children are aged 9, 6 and 3 so ideally would like some activites to keep them amused. I would also really love to experience the tradional picturesque villages and some good shopping. We prefer a quiet life to busy and just really appreciate beautiful scenery. We will be flying into Boston and then driving. Thanks!
welcome to VT. vermont is filled with lovely villages. with a family along, woodstock may be of interest. It is in southeast vermont near the interstate and relatively closer to boston. Called by good housekeeping magazine the prettiest village in the us some years ago, it has a nice covered bridge. there is a raptor center for birds of prey, also the billing's farm which shows a typical old style vermont farm with activities, the quechee gorge, nice restaurants, nice cute downtown with shopping, and the simon pearce glass works with very good and very expensive restaurant overlooking the falls on the river. and west on us 4 and onto 100 north or south find more pretty villages.
a second choice is stowe further northwest in the north central part of the state about which i don't know as much but it is beautiful and also has family attractions.
Thanks that is really helpful, i will definitely check out the woodstock area.
