More about Commodores Inn
Convenient, kid-friendly, and a good deal
My family and I stayed at the Commodore with a large group of other families for some spring skiing in March '07. Despite being down the road from Mount Mansfield, the inn was actually pretty convenient to the skiing as the free shuttle bus to the mountain leaves right from the front door, which means the parents don't have to keep the same skiing schedule as the kids. It was quite kid-friendly, with three hot tubs, a pool, a game room, buffet meals, a not-too-formal lobby, and a pond in the back (unlike a lot of the Stowe hotels which seem to be aimed more at couples or seniors). It also was a pretty good deal given how expensive everything else is in Stowe
Lovely atmosphere but very shabby rooms
This hotel really lets itself down with the condition of the room furnishings, they are probably the shabbiest I've ever seen in a hotel. Our television was old, the furniture was scratched and scuffed, the carpets were threadbare, the wash basin was cracked. There were no facilities such as hairdryer or coffee maker.
This was such a shame as the hotel itself is in a lovely location and was very welcoming with cookies and juice laid out for visitors. The lady on reception was very helpful, and there is a lovely lake out back for anyone to take a canoe on.
This would be a lovely place to stay if only it was refurbished.
Only for the DOGS
This hotel is abysmal. The staff is unhappy and lets everyone know it while you are staying there. The food is a nightmare as well as the dining area. The rooms are disgusting and dirty with mold and mildew issues. No hot water at times and "electrical surcharges" on your bill create a real positive atmosphere for the customer.
Opportunities are everywhere for improvement at the Commodore, but it seems like little will be accomplished.
The run-down nature of the hotel cannot be improved without significant investment. The staff will not be replaced as they are family and friends. The dining area will not improve as this is where the breakfast buffet is held every morning. The hotel does not use the extended grounds for hiking or activities for guests.
Pets are everywhere in this hotel and generally make this hotel uninhabitable. You must choose whether you are a hotel or a kennel. Anywhere in between is unacceptable!
I think the hotel location is great, but the hotel is lost due to poor management and staff.
You could do much better!!
The hotel is in shabby condition. Holes in the hallway walls, cracked sinks, dirty old pillows, carpets need to be replaced, furniture is scratched and the list goes on.
Our family stayed here during a hockey tournament. The first night the staff let the children run around like crazy. Hotel property was supposedly damaged but how they could tell I am not sure.
The second day/night the staff locked the elevator so kids were dragging hockey bags up and down the staircase. The conference room and “game/workout room” were locked. The workout equipment was old and looks to be falling apart. The women at the front desk spent the entire evening yelling at the kids for being loud and walking to fast. There was no happy medium. If the hotel had been more pro-active the first night; then they would not have needed the prison warden mentality the second night.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the parents felt the need to keep a close watch on the kids’ behaviors since they had paid so much to stay there and the hotel was so dirty and worn.
The hot buffet breakfast wasn’t great but it was better than a cold continental breakfast.
Just right for us
My two daughters (aged 14 and 11) and I stayed at Commodores Inn during a 4-day ski trip at Stowe, and we thought it was just great. It was very warm and "family friendly." We had a perfectly lovely time, at a fair price, and could not have asked for better service from the gracious staff. Our room (211) was comfortable and clean and all we needed. (Yes the furniture seemed a bit dowdy, but this did not bother us at all; we're skiers.) We liked the hotel's buffet breakfasts a lot. The food was good, the room was cheery and had nice views in all directions, and the pleasant waiters always kept my coffee cup filled. We also ate dinner at the Inn's own restaurant on two nights, enjoying both. The indoor pool and hot tub were a big hit with all of us. The location was fine (we rented a car, so we would not need to rely on the free shuttle, but we would have been just fine relying on the shuttle, in retrospect). The staff were all very pleasant, and we really tested them. First, our plane was two hours late and so we did not arrive until almost 3 am, yet we were greeted warmly by a front desk person who had waited up for us. Later, we needed advice on renting a car, and they provided it. One night we needed advice on restaurants, and they provided it. We asked for a rollaway bed (so my daughters would not have to share a bed), and this was provided. Finally, on our last day, we asked to extend our checkout by a few hours, so we could take one final dip in the pool before heading for the airport, and the staff let us do this, too, even though it meant putting off cleaning our room until later in the day. So we were quite grateful to the staff for repeated courtesies and kindnesses. We also thought it was a nice touch that they provide free coffee and hot chocolate in the lobby at all times for hotel guests, and lemonade and fresh cookies every afternoon, too. To sum things up, the Commodores Inn is not the Ritz. But it's comfortable, clean, friendly and reasonably priced. We definitely would stay there again.
Total Rip Off
Do not stay at this hotel. They are liars and charged me $100- for alleged damages. They claimed that there was smoking in the room, but I do not smoke. I will never visit them again and recommend that you DO NOT go there.
If you're a dog lover...
If you need a dog-friendly hotel in Stowe, consider the Commodore. I can sympathize with the human complaints about the place...it is threadbare and the furniture is a bit beat up. Sort of like what your own living room looks like, if you have a pooch. But it is very dog- friendly! We stayed here twice, and the picture that stays with me is sitting on one of the comfy sofas in the lobby, next to the roaring fire, enjoying a complementary drink and cookie. And watching people with their dogs passing through. If you're a dog person, it's a little slice of heaven. If not, you'd probably think, "What the hell am I doing here?"
As others have mentioned, the breakfast buffet is excellent, we bought a place in Stowe so no longer need the hotel room but still go for the buffet occasionally. And, believe it or not, the pizza place at the Shell station next door is second to none!
dirty and scruffy.
The rooms had filthy carpets, holes in the curtains and scruffy furniture. Bathroom floor again filthy. Wet towels put back for further use. Pool filthy with lots of hair in it. Kitchen staff wore stained cloithes and filthy shoes. Corridors very scruffy. These are personal complaints. Visited with 31 other people who had various complaints. Stay away.
so much better than reviews made it out to be!
i am extremely fussy when it comes to cleanlyness of hotels so when i read the reviews for the commodores inn i wasnt looking forward to my stay. i am a very fussy eater aswell so with 5 days of skiing food was very important. upon arrival we were welcomed with cookies and drinks and with the fire burning. this was fantastic bearing in mind we had just had a 4 hour journey from Boston. i checked my room as soon as i arrived and was surprised by the unexpected good quality of the room. the sheets were not stained, the shower was a bit old fashioned but clean, everything worked and it was in fairly good condition. i wouldnt say it was brilliant as i have stayed in 4*-5* hotels for most of my life but if i can bear it anyone can. i didnt even have to use the bed sheets i had brought from home. the breakfast had everything you could want and more and the dinner got better every night i was there.the staff were so helpfull and even helped me for half an hour whilst struggling to phone home. they saw to all my needs and i had the holiday of a life time. i was greeted every day after skiing with cookies and a drink. definatly a great place to stay with a school or if your going skiing !
Christmas in July
We came upon the Commodore looking for an inexpensive buffet style meal. We were actulaly staying at the old english inn and it was putting a damper on our trip and we wanted to salvage what was left of it. Nichole was more than happy to have us, and the rate was more than reasonable. They have a hot tub, indoor and outdoor pool. All well maintained. I can not say enough about the hospitality here...the wait staff, lounge, front desk,restaurant..they treated us like family. Bob is the chef, and he made the best home cooked meals. They were always hot ,fresh and he made sure we had everything we needed, even a few light hearted jokes to wake us up. The whole family works the kitchen and do a great job. The bar tendress Jessie was fantastic, she even stayed up late for us. After dinner Nichole turned on the fireplace,it was damp and chilly out. I felt like we were in and old movie, sitting by the fireplace with a cup of tea, children playing a game of monopoly nearby,,,it was like xmas at home only I didnt have to cook. We were so comfortable there,we could have worn or PJs in the lobby. They have board games, free coffee and tea station, etc etc We even had a great turkey dinner before leaving,,,we might not have much left to see in Stowe, but we will make the trip just to visit this great crew of people. If you want to be another room number stay somewhere else ,,If you want to meet some of Vermonts finest...check your worries at the door, and open your hearts to their home, because it might just become your home away from home. Thanks fot the relaxing stay.
