Andersen's Lodge: Austrian gemutlichkeith in Stowe, VT

Andersen's Lodge is a friendly little establishment in Stowe, VT. It is managed by Dietmar and Trude Heiss, expatriot Austrians. Trude does the business side, while Dietmar, a trained chef, insures excellent cuisine.

Dietmar's chocolate cake is wunderbar, and nobody can make a nice roast pork any juicier or tastier.

Breakfast is basically cooked to order.....whatever you' d like within reason. I prefer waffles or hotcakes with maple syrup, and some ham or bacon!

Unique Quality: Simple ambience, and the opportunity to know and enjoy your fellow travelers. There is a small fridge down in the basement, where everyone keeps their beer or wine. Each evening, Dietmar puts out chips and cheese. People kick back, share a few drinks and generally enjoy each other's stories and company. It's especially nice in ski season.

Andersen's also has a sauna and hot tub, although I've never used them.

The draw here are the meals and simple accomodations. Basically, for about $100/night, two people get a great breakfast and dinner, and will have a terrific vacation.
