Heart of the Green Mountains
Vermont was the last of the 50 United States which I was able to visit but I hope that it does not take me as long to make my second visit as it did to make the first. As I circumnavigated the state in my whirlwind (one week) tour, Stowe made a particularly strong impression upon me. After reading a history of the state and a biography of Ethan Allen, I am even more impressed and eager to return.
Situated in the Green Mountains, Stowe’s downtown area, first settled 200 years ago, is filled with delightfully quaint historic buildings and covered bridges. The soaring church spire, which will probably be the first manmade structure which you see upon approaching Stowe sits atop the Stowe Community Church which was built in 1863.
Stowe is home to Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak, and one of the most well-known ski resorts in the Eastern United States. From the top of Mount Mansfield, hikers and skiers are treated to seemingly endless panoramas of Lake Champlain and the surrounding peaks of the Green Mountains.
