The Woodstock Country Club (5 photos )
First opened in 1895 in a cow pasture, this short 6000 yard course -18 holes, par 70, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr - is a visual masterpiece set in the Kedron River Valley and extending into the adjacent hills. Short, narrow, and with the aformentioned river plus a few ponds in play on 12 holes, it is demanding. On two holes (the fourth the toughest hole in Vermont), one must tee off across the creek and then cross it again in front of the green. All the expected ancillary facilities are available as one might expect. And once again, we have played this course multiple times - the staff is unfailing friendly and helpful. Bring a ball retriever and plenty of extra balls - the damn creek is everywhere. Trust me on this one.
