Travel Tips for Alexandria

Thank you, Tim

by b1bob

When I came up for the inauguration, I stayed with my good friend Tim in a residential neighbourhood in Alexandria. I orginally met Tim during my Excellent Embassy Adventure in Washington 3 years before when I went after my Brazilian tourist visa. See, hotels were either full up or they engaged in some tall price gouging. A hotel my boss and I stayed in a few years before for $45 was charging $189!

I met Tim that evening at 6:15 at the Huntington metro station. From there, we went to the Safeway to get us some fixins for lasagne. At his house, I met his brother and sister. We watched a little TV after supper and went to bed earlier than usual because we had to get up with the chickens the following morning. See, Tim volunteered to be one of the leaders at the inauguration. That worked well for me too because that gave me time to have a leisurely breakfast and tour a neighbourhood in Washington before it was time to go through security and attend the inaugural ceremony. We had planned on me spending a second night there, but I was so tired from all that walking both inauguration eve and inauguration day that I couldn't do what was needed to get a good day in for the day after. Once I fell into bed that night, there would have been no getting me up the following morning. So, I went home Thursday night rather tha Friday. Thank you, Tim.

Old Town Crier - Local Events in Alexandria

by Ewingjr98

The Old Town Crier is one of the best local sources for events and attractions in Alexandria. It is published locally, just a block off King Street, and a block from my apartment in Old Town. The glossy-cover newspaper runs a variety of features each month, as well as provides an events calendar, restaurant and bar guide, a listing of local arts and antique shops, and much more. Monthly features often cover travel, local history, hotel reviews, and more.

If you are in Old Town and need some information, the Old Town Crier is a good starting point. Look for their papers in local businesses and in newspaper boces along busy streets like King Street. It's FREE!

Historic Homes Walk - George's footsteps

by Yaqui

When you are in the downtown area or even by the marina. You need to just walk around and take in the historical homes. You know when you’re on an actual historic street because of the very narrow streets and many of these homes have historical markers on the front by the door with the year it was built. It's almost hard to know the difference in the new and old homes, because the builders take such care in building the new ones authentically. The streets a much wider on the new homes.

Alexandria Seaport Center

by Yaqui

This floating museum houses a boat building program, a marine sciences lab, and offers a boat livery of small sailing and rowing craft that visitors can rent. They also teach the skill to youth groups with the hopes of passing on a centuries long skill and craft. The gents that run the operation were so friendly and very earger to display what was being crafted right there on the spot.
Located at : North of the Torpedo Factory on the waterfront, at the base of Queen Street

George Washington's Alexandria Academy

by Ewingjr98

The Alexandria Academy was completed in 1786 by the leading citizens of Alexandria, including George Washington. It was one of America's first public schools, and it offered an education to local tuition-paying students alongside free black chldren, orphans, and poor children. The academy existed in various forms until 1823 when it became a private home, but it was later returned to the city of Alexandria for educational purposes. The school operated until 1967 and was restored by the Historic Alexandria Foundation in 1999. Today the school seems to be unused and there is a for sale sign out front.

The historic marker at this site reads: "On 17 Dec. 1785, George Washington endowed a school here in the recently established Alexandria Academy 'for the purpose of educating orphan children.' In 1812, an association of free African Americans founded its own school here in space vacated by white students. Young Robert E. Lee attended another school in the Academy from 1818 to 1823, when it closed and the building was sold. During the Civil War the Academy served as a freedman’s hospital. Returned to the Alexandria School Board in 1884, the Alexandria Academy was used as a school and administrative facility until 1982. The Historic Alexandria Foundation restored it in 1999."
