Civil War Unknowns

by jamiesno

Stay tuned..

Near Arlington House, in what was once part of its famous rose garden, stands a monument dedicated to the unknown soldiers who died in the Civil War. The monument, dedicated in September 1866, stands atop a masonry vault containing the remains of 2,111 soldiers gathered from the fields of Bull Run and the route to the Rappahannock. The remains were found scattered across the battlefields or in trenches and brought here. This monument was the first memorial at Arlington to be dedicated to soldiers who had died in battle, and who later could not be identified. Because in some instances only a few bones or a skull were recovered, it is assumed that the vault contains the remains of Confederate soldiers as well as Union troops.

Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs ordered that these bodies be gathered and buried on this particular site, knowing that the presence of graves here would prevent the Lee family from inhabiting their house again.

Marks mass graves of about 2,111 unknowns gathered from U.S. Civil War battlefields.

Meeting with friends, part 2

by b1bob

Normally, during business trips such as the one I took from 9-10 December 2002, I don't get an opportunity to connect with friends other than, maybe, by telephone. However, on 9 December, I managed to arrange to meet Tim Enright, whom I met on the metro a year earlier when I applied for my Brazilian tourist visa at that country's embassy. We decided to meet at Ruby Tuesday at the Ballston Common metro stop. Tim had the chicken and pasta. I had the fried shrimp.

Waiting for the hotel shuttle

by matcrazy1

We took dozens of pictures of both Arlington (the Pentagon, the Arlington National Cementary and neighbourhoods) and Washington, DC from the rooftop sun deck of Sheraton National Hotel. When we finally finished, we took an elevator down to the lobby. In the US hotels always look for a star by an elevator button to catch the lobby.

We had to wait a few minutes for our comfortable and large hotel shuttle van to Pentagon City metro station which leaves on the half hour. Nat with his all luggage that was the paper bag full of treasures and Kathy took a seat in comfortable lobby chairs.

Arlington has a lot of...

by HIckes

Arlington has a lot of different things to see, from a wide variety of cultures (being so close to D.C., how could it not?)

Just walk up to someone and say 'Hi!', and if that person doesn't speak your language, someone who does isn't far away!
