It was originally the Ashland Baptist Church. It originally had a bell tower with a steam locomotive bell donated by the RF & P. They sold the bell to pay the minister during the Great Depression. During the War Between the States, it was used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers. After the war they had to put down a new floor to cover up the blood stains.

It is the middle of September and it is Saturday and it is Ashland.... must be Party Time.
The annual block party in Ashland is a fun time for residents and visitors.
Live music from several state and local groups; food by The Smokey Pig and Sullivan's Pub; lots of dancing in the street. There are children's activities like moonwalk jumping cage and airbrushed tattoos.
Gates open at 4pm and cost is $10 ($5 for kids). Music begins at 7pm and lasts until 10pm. Beer and wine are on sale (do NOT bring your own) and an ID is required. Bring lawn chairs if you want to sit and rest!
The Gospel Chicken House takes place every Saturday night west of Ashland. It's a local cultural experience.
There is no admission charge, but I'd recommend you be ready to donate when the hat goes around, and buy some dessert.
The musical groups vary from week to week, and it's all southern white gospel music. The local radio station, WHAN 1430 AM broadcasts the show (but I don't remember if it is live or sometime on Sunday; sorry).
Go west from Ashland on Rt 54 for about 6 miles, turn Right on Scotchtown Rd, go several miles, and take the first Right. Follow the signs to the venue.
Ashland prides itself as the "Center of the Universe". Well, I am not sure that being in the center of the county that is in the center of the state qualifies you for such a grandiose title, but it was the center of our daytrips in the region.
