What is a Hokie?
by mikelisaanna
Virginia Tech's sports teams are nicknamed the Hokies. "What is a Hokie?" you may wonder. The nickname's origin is an old campus sports cheer which began with the words "Hokie Hokie Hokie High, Tech Tech VPI, So-la-rex So-la-ra, Polytech Virginia".
Virginia Tech's sports teams used to be nicknamed the Fighting Gobblers (as in turkeys), but sometime during the 1970s (I'm guessing) that name was replaced by the Hokies. A reminder of the Virginia Tech's old nickname is the school's mascot, a large maroon and orange turkey-like bird named the Hokiebird.
Maroon and Orange
by mikelisaanna
Maroon and orange are the official colors of Virginia Tech. As far as we know, Virginia Tech is the only college team in the United States that has this unusual combination of colors. If you walk around Blacksburg, especially on a football weekend, you will see plently of people wearing maroon and/or orange clothing. It may not be fashionable anywhere else in the USA, but the maroon and orange combination lets you know you're among Virginia Tech Hokie fans.
Tech Triumph - Virginia Tech's Fight Song
by mikelisaanna
Tech Triumph is the name of Virginia Tech's official fight song, which is played at all Virginia Tech football and basketball games, especially after touchdowns at football games. Tech Triumph is instantly recognizable because of its unusual opening lines - it starts with Reveille, the military bugle call (Virginia Tech has always had a military Corps of Cadets). Almost no one knows the words to the first 95% of Tech Triumph, but everyone in the stadium will sing out the last lines, which are "So, give me a Hokie, Hokie, Hokie hi. Let's go VPI." Tech triumph was composed in 1919 by Pete Maddux, a member of the Virginia Tech band, and Mattie Eppes, a neighbor from his hometown.

by mikelisaanna
Bring clothingwith orange and maroon in the color scheme. These are Virginia Tech's school colors, and you will see them everywhere in Blacksburg. It is an unusual color combination that immediately identify you as a Virginia Tech alum/supporter. Don't wear blue and orange - those are the colors of the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech's arch-rival.
Virginia Tech Hokies Football Games
by mikelisaanna
The Virginia Tech Hokies are one of the best college football teams in the United States. They play their home football games in Blacksburg's Lane Stadium, which is located on the campus of Virginia Tech. The games are usually played on Saturdays in the fall and attract crowds in excess of 60,000 people.
Virginia Tech is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, which includes a number of other schools with strong football programs, including Florida State, Miami, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech's biggest rivalry is with the University of Virginia, which it traditionally plays against every year in late November. A blanket for October and November games, because Lane Stadium can get windy and cold. Also, rent or buy a seat cushion (preferably one with a back support). Lane stadium has aluminum bleachers, which are hard and cold after a few hours on an October or November day.
