Bears Den Trail Center: The Ultimate Hikers Hostel and Campground

This is a wonderful piece of architecture owned by the AppalachianTrail Conservancy and operated by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. The Stone Lodge was built in 1933 as a private home and was converted into a hostel in 1985. The Main Lodge sleeps 36 and is equipped with a kitchen, grand living room and a dining room. The Lodge, cottage and campground are available for individuals and group retreats. Discounts for youth groups. Bears Den is open seven days a week.

This is a great getaway from the Washington DC Metro area. I spent two nights here in early October (the foliage was just begining to turn) and the mens dorm was nearly empty. The price for a dorm bed was $22.00 camping is available for a lesser rate. Check their website for more about the facilities and volunteering as well. www.bearsdencenter.org
