Great place to stay
Thought this to be a very nice hotel. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The rooms are large with avove average furnishings and you get a full breakfast in the AM. Nice quiet location
but close to everything.

Stayed at the English Inn June 8 weekend. Called around C'Ville and found they had one room left, a suite with a King bed and a sleep sofa. Worked out fine, as I was travelling with my husband and daughter. The room was very clean, had a small frig, sink and microwave and 2 TV's which is perfect!
The bed was pretty comfy ( maybe a little harder than I like but they all are) and my daughter had no complaints about the sleep sofa. They have cookies in the lobby and the indoor pool is huge! The kids love it. The hot breakfast buffet is good and a definite plus.
This was our second stay at this hotel. My daughter plays travel softball and we will definitely be back next time we are in Charlottesville.
We found the listing in the AAA Tourbook and called for a reservation . Location is convenient to one of the bypass roads and not far from UVA or downtown. Room was good sized with a king bed and a chair + ottoman. Air conditioning was not working so the front desk moved us 2 doors down. Free coffee available 24hrs in the lobby. Free breakfast is one of the best I've had with eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, waffles, cereal etc. This is in a separate room down the hall from the lobby and there was lots of seating too. Has indoor pool and internet connections in the room. There's a great bagel restaurant next door too. I believe the AAA rate was $89 on a Wednesday night.
For dinner we HIGHLY recommend Zocalo in the downtown pedestrian mall. (--) Excellent!
I had read favorable reviews of this hotel, and it was a favorite of my parents whenever they visited when I was a resident of the Charlottesville area some years ago. Therefore, I was looking forward to my stay and made a reservation on the hotel website. I did not guarantee it with a credit card, as it offered a 6 p.m. hold and I imagined that would be honored if I called with a credit card number before 6 p.m.
Weary from two days of business meetings, and looking forward to a recreational visit to Charlottesville, I called the hotel at 5 p.m. to provide a credit card number for that evening's stay. I was dismayed to learn that they no longer had a room of the required type available ("the guest who had the room reserved for [me] had stayed on" was the excuse provided) and I would need to seek accommodations elsewhere!
No assistance with securing alternate arrangements was offered, and I learned (after calling no less than 20 properties) that an event in town had caused the rest to fill up. I was finally able to find a place to stay in a much less favorable location, and with only basic acceptability.
I know things happen and people's plans change--but it also seems to me that a reservation should be held until the time specified, or a business should make it right. I won't be staying at the English Inn in the future--and I won't even try!
I booked the English Inn 3 days ahead of my family’s stay on August 14th based on Trip Advisor reviews. When the automated confirmation came back I realised I needed to clarify the number of guests, as the booking website was ambiguous; so I e-mailed updating the details and seeking confirmation of the revised rate. I had no response to my mail nor to the reminder I sent a couple of days later.
On arrival at the English Inn I saw my name was on the board as the ‘Guest of the Day’. I was given a welcome card and a voucher to give me 10% off the room rate on a subsequent stay. Unfortunately the check-in was complicated by the fact the receptionist had a higher rate showing on her system than I had on my confirmation. Although I could show her the proper rate on the confirmation, she couldn’t change it as she didn’t have the authority, and I’d need to speak to a Manger the next morning. Could I speak to someone there and then? No; as only she and the maintenance man were on duty. This was at 6:15pm.
In fact we met the maintenance man shortly afterwards, as the washbasin in our room wouldn’t drain.
We went out for an excellent meal at the nearby Aberdeen Barn, which I’d recommend.
Breakfast was a big shock. Now here I’ll make it clear I’m English. I wasn’t expecting, nor seeking, a clone of an English breakfast, but I was surprised to see that the self-service breakfast was taken on polystyrene plates using sub-airline quality plastic cutlery. I struggle to reconcile this with the hotel’s self-description of “Where Fine British Tradition Meets Southern Hospitality”. Well I’m sorry, but the English don’t have a tradition of polystyrene plates and plastic cutlery, and how can you be hospitable with next to no staff?
And the breakfast? Well let’s call it ‘unappetising’. I ate some potato, a yoghurt and a banana.
I gave some feedback to Kathleen Palmer, the Director of Sales as we checked out. She explained that the hotel is not a ‘full service hotel’ though they are looking to upgrade the cutlery to a higher quality silver-look plastic replacement. The key for potential customers to understand is that whatever the exterior appearance suggests this is not a full service hotel. It runs at a minimum staffing cost, so I imagine that’s why nobody replied to my mails, and breakfast uses disposable plates and utensils. It’s another roadside stopover.
So please tell me you more experienced USA travellers – did I get what I should expect for an $85 per night rate or should I expect a little better?
And my voucher for a future stay? It’s about to go out with the rubbish.
I booked this hotel based on it being ranked #1 on this website. The hotel is average at best. The lobby is very nice, as is the breakfast in the morning. The room was just an average room, no better than any other room I have stayed in (and I stay in about 80 rooms per year.)
The wall lamp by my bed did not want to stay upright so I had to keep it balanced just right to keep from falling over. Then in the middle of the night, something in the wall woke me up and kept me up. A mouse? Roach? Don't know... There was some sort of scratching action going on inside the wall that didn't end until I turned on my broken wall lamp and pounded on the wall a few times.
The room and shower were both very clean, and there were plenty of towels and toiletries for my wife and me.
Breakfast in the morning was actually pretty good; one of the better breakfasts I have had in a hotel. The staff was very friendly. They also offer discounts in the Travel Discount Guide book.
Overall not a bad place, but there are other hotels in the area that are of similar quality for a lower price.
The English Inn was far and away the best value in the area, having checked all over town for rooms. We could not believe that a full hot breakfast buffet and the huge indoor pool were included at the price we paid. The hotel has lots of personality and is very unique, unlike the "chains" we stayed in for most of our trip. There was lots of great shopping within waliking distance and thye are very close to UVa, John Paul Jones Arena (where we saw a show and walked to save the headache of driving and paying for parking). We will be staying at The English Inn in the future, whenver we get a chance!
The hotel had good and bad reviews, and a reasonable rating (4 of 53), and having trusted reviews before, we trusted these. What a bad decision that was.
The room had an interesting chemical/cleaning smell - not that pleasant. There was a plumbing problem that needed sorting but then the bathroom floor was left dirty. The free tea/coffee had run out and was not replaced .... and then, breakfast the next morning.
Were we in a different hotel to the others that mentioned a superb cooked breakfast? Pancakes were a packet mix and no flavour, the orange juice machine was giving out water (until it was eventually refilled), there were no eggs left ... I could carry on but you get the picture. And plastic plates and cutlery?
I would not recommend this hotel nor would I stay again.
We were very pleased with our experience at the English Inn. It was very conveniently located off the interstate, yet set back a little from the street in a business park, which made for a quieter and calmer stay.
Our room and bed were excellent, and the breakfast buffet was good and very convenient for us both mornings we stayed there. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I liked the inviting lobby and partook of the cookies (store-bought) one of the days. The other day they were out as a group of senior citizens had swept through.
The pool area was large and attractive, with classical music again lending a calm and elegant atmosphere. I would definitely stay at the English Inn again when in Charlottesville.
We stopped into Charlottesville, a lovely town. We found many Hotels of poor quality very high priced. When we happened upon the English Inn , we were instantly pleased. The prices were the best around. The Hotel was distinquished, with carved wood mantles over the firepalce and surrounding the 'conservatory area 'of the main lobby. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and made to feel very welcome! We arrived just as fresh hot cookies were being served in the conservatory area, as well as fresh hot coffee and tea.
The staff was great, they had us registered with ease and when we did reach our room, we wre more than pleased. It was quite roomy, and well appointed. We particular enjoyed the views of the gardens behind the Hotel, and took many walks that way.
The housekeeping staff was attentive and very pleasant, always with a smile!
The management staff Mark, Kathy , Raymond our special thanks to you for making our journey such a delight. You certainly traetd us like family. We will always recommend this Hotel, and intend to be regulars in the future. Great job!!
