We recently had some friends visit from out of state and decided to take a trip through the mountains. The park is extremely well maintained, and the views were simply stunning. We tackled the 35ish mile stretch between Swift Run Gap and Rockfish Gap in about 3 hours including a stop for a picnic lunch and several overlooks. No luck as far as wildlife went, however it is far from peak season.
As of 3/2/2008 a $15.00 ticket gives you 7 days worth of unlimited access to the drive, although realistically 1-2 days at the most will be more than enough time for all but the most rabid nature nut. There is a 35 mph speed limit which is strictly enforced by the park due to both the nature of the road (It is rather winding), and the abundance of wildlife in the area. Not all services are available year round (i.e. fueling stations), so be sure you've got a full tank of gas before entering. As with any natural area the rule "leave no trace" applies, so be sure that whatever you enter the park with leaves with you. Finally, it can get cold up there no matter the time of year, so be sure to pack a coat.
