Travel Tips for Culpeper

A BIT ABOUT CULPEPER

by LoriPori

Culpeper County is shaped like a diamond, with the town of CULPEPER in the center. The town is where the highways cross - Route 3 from the east, Route 522 from the west and U.S. 15 and 29 from the north and south. Its southern border is the Rapidan River, its northern border is the Rappahannock, which by the way was the Civil War boundary between the North and the South.
Chartered in 1749, Culpeper County was named for Lord Thomas Culpeper, Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1679 - 1683.
With the outbreak of the Civil War, Culpeper's strategic railroad location made it a significant supply station for Confederate and Union troops. The Culpeper area witnessed more than one hundred battles and skirmishes during the war. After the Civil War, the town grew to become a thriving regional center.
Culpeper is a unique community that preserves a large collection of historic buildings and landmarks and also has a charming mix of boutiques, restaurants and curio shops. East Street is graced with the oldest homes in town.
Hans and I first drove through Culpeper on our way to Luray Caverns - (Culpeper is only 35 miles from Fredericksburg). We didn't have time to stop on that day, but I knew I wanted to come back here as it was such a charming town. So we indeed stop by on our way to hook up with Skyline Drive on Sunday October 24.

LORIPORI'S IMAGES OF CULPEPER

by LoriPori

"BILLY FRAY FEED SHOP"

One of the oldest commercial buildings in Culpeper is the old BILLY FRAY FEED SHOP circa 1835, located 195 East Davis Street. It has been used as a stable, a tobacco warehouse and as a jail by both union and confederate armies (in the lower level). It also must have been at one time the Yowell Hardware Co. Inc. The original portion of the building contains hand-made bricks fired in Culpeper, hand-hewn and pegged timbers. The interior was renovated in the early 1980's for use as a restaurant which is now "The Pub" and "The Hazel River Inn/Restaurant".

"125 EAST DAVIS STREET"

This wonderful building on 125 EAST DAVIS STREET (circa 1890's) once housed the Post Office / Farmers & Merchants Bank / Clark & Co. Grocers. Known as the "Martin Furniture Building", the triple lunettes of this Romanesque Revival Building's parapet reflect the three businesses for which this building was originally built.
The building is now home to "The Cameleer" which is a specialty store selling international giftware and Aboriginal handicrafts.
