Travel Tips for Doswell
Monorail
by b1bob
Ideally, this would be a transportation tip. However, when Paramount took over the King's Dominion theme park in 1993, taking away the monorail and the wild animal preserve- the very thing that got this park started. Taking the monorail through the preserve is safer than driving through the park. One time in the Lion Country safari days, a rhinoceros almost overturned one of those foreign jobs.
The Apple Turnover
by b1bob
This was one of my favourite rides from the time I worked up the courage to ride it in the spring of 1979 (with the prodding of Debbie Wilson) through to the time they removed it in the early 1990s. There's not much to it really. It is a spinning ride on a hydraulic arm that gradually takes you up 65 feet (±20 m.), you spin at maximum height a few turns and make the slow descent back.
Old Dominion Railroad
by b1bob
This should be a transportation tip, but the Old Dominion Railroad is yet another casualty of progress. The railroad was a steam engine that gave passengers a tour of the backwoods of the park. They had special effects making us feel like we were about to get boarded and hijacked. they even had an animatronic "talking" bear to entertain folks waiting at the station.
Halloween at K.D.
by b1bob
In the 1970's and '80s the folks at K.D. would really put on a show for us at Halloween. There were haunted houses, ride operators in costume, manakin parts in pizza sauce (to look like blood) to freak out the really young ones. It's unusual to go to K.D. when it's nippy outside. They stopped doing Halloween, closing round about my birthday, for a time. Recently, they have gone back to the old throwback of putting on a show at Halloween. Hopefully, they'll bring back the Apple Turnover, the monorail, the Old Dominion Railroad, and maybe a few shops and restaurants.
Racing Cars
by b1bob
On exactly the same principle which the Blue Ridge Parkway (see "Must See Activities") operates, these more modern looking sport cars entertain the children and their parents in the Hanna-Barbera section of the park.
