Travel Tips for Fredericksburg
Beware of Closed Restaurants
by Buckmarko
I found a couple of restaurants for another web site I thought looked good. Alas one had a working web site and the other I only had an address. I found the one restaurant but it was long closed. The other I either had a bad address or it moved. A good lesson for any vacation was learned. Have a phone number and call ahead.
Rappahannock River
by Tom_Fields
The Friends of the Rappahannock help to educate people about this river. It's the longest free-flowing river in the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed, running along the eastern side of Fredericksburg. The river offers a wide range of activities. Visit the website listed below.
Good Mexican
by Buckmarko about Pancho Villas
I usually don't do chain restaurants. We were hungry and this was close. It's a local, not national, chain so it still ok for me.
The chips and salsa flow freely. Everything we ordered was tasty and quick. I recommend it. The seafood fajitas were very tasty.
George Washington Boyhood Home -- Ferry Farm
by Ewingjr98
The Ferry Farm, located on the north side of the Rappahannock River just across from Frederickburg, is the home where George Washington lived from the age of six until his early twenties. This farm is where Washington is said to have chopped down his father's cherry tree and where he chucked a boulder across the Rappahannock (or skipped a silver dollar?). George inherieted Ferry Farm after his father's death in 1743. During his years at Ferry Farm George Washington also lived part of the time at his half-brother's plantation, Mount Vernon, then he inherited Mount Vernon in 1752 when his half-brother died. After Washington left the home at Ferry farm, his mother, Mary Ball Washington, continued to live here until 1772.
It is said that Union soldiers dismantled the house for firewood in the 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, and the original site was just rediscovered in 2008.
Visitor Centre
by iaint
I went in here a couple of times. It’s well staffed with helpful people and is centrally located (with a car park). A useful resource.
It has a few gifts on offer as well. In fact, it is one of the few places where postcards are on sale! I got a t-shirt for my 16 year old, and he wears it all the time. Amazing...
