Travel Tips for Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg Visitor Centre

by b1bob

The centre offers everything you need to know about Fredericksburg and surrounds including a film about the area, parking passes, hotel reservations. Horsedrawn carriages and trolley buses leave from there frequently by the day from mid-spring to mid-autumn. Most importantly of all, it is one of the few places in the old town which offers public loos. It's open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week from Memorial Day through to Labour Day and 9-5 the rest of the year.

Crossing over the Rappahannock...

by OnMyOwnPath

Crossing over the Rappahannock River from the Falmouth Bridge on Route 1 south into Fredericksburg, instead of going into town, take a right at the stoplight next to the Kentucky Fried Chicken and the gas station there. Take the first right, then a left, and you will be on a road that parallels the river. On the side of the road (across from the church), you can park your car and walk down to the rocks along the river's edge. If you are uncomfortable parking your car on the side of the road, you can also park in the church parking lot. You will see steps to go down to a narrow crossing. Watch your steps here, as it's a narrow walking area and path to get to the river. On summer days, you will see some people in the river itself. I was just there on January 14, which was sunny, but not very warm (about 6-7 degrees celsius), and there were about 5 or 6 people there. On the other side of the bridge, at Old Mill Park, you find more people there generally, and especially in the summer. Also in the summer, on the Stafford side of the river directly across from the park, you will find people pulling up to the river's edge in their cars and sunbathe or go tubing. Don't let the calmness fool you; as I don't need to state, the river can be very dangerous.

Fredericksburg National Cemetery

by Tom_Fields

This is where many of the fallen from the Battle of Fredericksburg are buried. During the Battle of Fredericksburg, General Longstreet positioned his artillery atop this hill. It gave his guns a commanding view of the battlefield. Confederate artillery had overlapping fields of fire, enabling it to inflict huge losses on the advancing Union army.

James Monroe Museum

by iaint

Monroe is best known as the 5th President of the USA. Less well known is that he was a lawyer, and practised in Fredericksburg for a while.

The museum & library is interesting, and certainly gives a view of his achievements as a whole, rather than just being President.

One health warning however. The building housing the museum is not where he practised. It was on that site, but in an older building which no longer exists.

It’s worth a visit. Not big, but interesting.

"UMW" in the website address is the University of Mary Washington - it owns the museum etc

Fredericksburg Lodge No. 4

by b1bob

Young George Washington was raised a Mason in this lodge at age 20. The lodge museum contains memorabilia relating to his membership, including the Bible used at his initiation ceremony in 1752, the minutes of his meetings at the lodge and an original portrait. Second only to the national Masonic Monument in Alexandria, this lodge contains the most relics of the first U.S. president's masonhood.
