A town with all tourist amenities
by Faiza-Ifrah about Hotels and Inns in Front Royal
For exploring Shenandoah National Park, my recommendation will be to stay in a hotel or an inn in Front Royal.
For details on this historic town, please refer to the pages by Tom_Fields.
The advantages of staying in Front Royal are many: For one, the town serves as a northern entrance to the park. You can start your travel on the Skyline Drive from northern entrance all the way to southern exit in one day and return by taking I81 back. Secondly, if you are stationed here, you can take another day long excursion to Washington, DC. The town itself has all amenities required by the tourists.
Goodview Cottages
by Suet about In the woods but in comfort
I would DEFINITELY recommend this cabin as it has every thing you could possibly want in a holiday let. You have to pay $75 to have it cleaned after you leave which is worth the price. The only thing I had a bit of concern about was the steep wooden path down to the front door. I can imagine that it would be very slippery in icy or extremely wet conditions.
If you need anything at all, call on Dwayne, the cabin on your left as you look at the cottage. He is a most entertaining and helpful person and knows Becki adn Peck Thomas well. I spent AGES looking for this place on the web. I was trying to find the perfect place for a three night getaway that was near the Skyline Drive. This lovely little cottage sleep 6 comfortably and is easy to find if you use the Sat Nav. It's right by the lakeside, but high up enough so that you will not get flooded. Your mobile phone works there as does the internet, if you cannot bear to leave the lap top at home. They have fishing rods you can use plus all the amenities indicated in the website. There is a boat and a lovely deck area where you can sit outside and enjoy nature. If bugs bother you, there is an enclosed screened hut so that you can sit outside and talk in comfort.
The website gives you all the information, so please look at it carefully and contact Becky if you want to book or indeed have any problems at all. You can easily see if the week or days you want is booked by looking at the calendar. Do make sure you aske for sheets and towels and if you want to using the washing machine, make sure you bring detergent. Same for the dishwasher.
Hop on Skyline Drive

Front Royal is located just at the northern end of Skyline Drive. Skyline Drive is located in Shenandoah National Park. The drive winds for 105 miles through the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian chain). It provides great views of the landscape and wildlife.

A 100 mile long drive through the Shenadoa National Park is called the Skyline Drive.
In this travelogue you will find some pics of this great drive.

The fall is the best time for Skyline Drive...as it is the 11th of the month, we are having a late fall this year, and the leaves are just barely starting to change...the 3rd and 4th week of October are usually the best times. Sunny, warm days, cool nights. As we have just gotten over some record rainfall, and it's supposed to rain somemore, I would check out weather.com for additional data for western VA.~

Appalachian Trail in Virginia
by glenn57
I am planning to do some day hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, in May. What segments of Virginia portion of the Trail are the most beautiful ?
Re: Appalachian Trail in Virginia

I've done a bunch of day hikes from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Just last fall I saw a Black Bear off the trail (he/she saw me first and bolted). The AT criscrosses the road in several locations throughout the Park. The drive is pretty spectacular with vista aplenty. The park store sells a publication that lists all the day hikes with mileage and difficulty, a very useful reference.

The best place to post is

And I agree that Shenandoah NP is by far the best place for day hikes on the AT in Virginia.

Can you see the Shenandoah River from any of the day hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah NP ?
Re: Appalachian Trail in Virginia

You can see the Shenandoah river from Skyline Drive when the visibility is good. Any hike with a western view Vista should give you a look at the river. You'll be a good distance from the river and the Shenandoah is not very prominent from the AT.
Things to do in Mcgaheysville, VA
by yellowlab
We are staying at Massnutten Resort in McG, VA. We will have our 9 year old son with us. What things are there to do in the area? Is Charlottesville too far for a day trip?
TIA

C'ville wouldn't at all be too far as a day trip. Monticello is a must see and there's also the home of James Monroe which is near to Monticello. Perhaps a bit closer to McGaugheysville is Luray which is home to Luray Caverns. I think your 9-year old would enjoy this. Also a drive along Skyline Drive in the Shenendoah National Park is a must.
