Are there any conservative cities left?
I live in Portland, Oregon, and have to get out of this place. I've been here four years and find it way too "progressive" for me. I'm looking at North Carolina-- Raleigh, Asheville, Durham, etc. And Virginia is another interest. Is Lynchburg pretty traditional and family-oriented? Or would anyone recommend another place in Virgina or West Virginia? How about Richmond? Any info would help. Thanks!

I have heard that they are pretty big on family values in Salt Lake City.

You might like Jasper, Texas, where James Byrd, an African American on disability, was dragged to death behind a pickup truck, or Laramie, Wyoming, where Matthew Shepard was beaten to death because he was gay. If it's misogyny you're after, a previous suggestion about Utah is probably right up your alley.

Aparrently Orcas Island isn't open to opposing ideas like the other mention places.

It depends on how far right you want your neighbors to be. Lynchburg is a pretty conservative town (hometown of Jerry Falwell) and very family-oriented, but rather small. Roanoke is a little larger and similarly conservative. I prefer Charlottesville and Richmond (I lived in both), which are bigger with more variety and things to do. Both towns have pretty diverse populations, with all flavors of the political spectrum, but are much more conservative overall than Portland. In North Carolina, Winston-Salem and Charlotte are fairly conservative cities. Raleigh/Durham is a little more middle-of-the-road due to the three big universities (Duke, UNC and NC State).
