Travel Tips for Mechanicsville

Skate America

by gipper84

Skate America was a roller skating wrink which had been around for a good little while. It was one of the only remaining wrinks in the Richmond area, and was quite a bit of fun. When I was younger, I used to go skating every Thursday night. I loved Skate America, because I could go, meet up with my high school friends and enjoy watching them bust their tails. My mom skated professional at one point in her life, so I guess I could say she taught me well. Skate America reminded me of the show Happy Day's. It just had the mood of a fun hang out spot, where couples could get together and skate the night away. If you have never been skating, Skate America was the place to go. It was an experience you wouldn't forget, and to top it all off, it had a good little snack bar to cure your craven for food during the night. Unfortunately the wrink was sold to an older woman who just recently decided to close it and sell it over to the Salvation Army. The building will now be used as a Salvation Army storage.

Lee-Davis High School

by b1bob

I went to Lee-Davis High School from autumn 1984 through to spring 1987. I have enough memories of my high school years to fill the Library of Congress. Suffice it to say that I got my share of grief from teachers and classmates, but I gave as good as I got. (If you don't believe me, ask Mr. Eshleman.) I keep contact with a fair amount of friends I knew in high school to this day.

Good neighbours

by b1bob

In the city, and even some suburban communities, a good neighbour is hard to find. In some places I've been, folks live next door to someone for 10 years and don't get to know them. In Mechanicsville, folks know their neighbours. In all my years in Mechanicsville, there are no better neighbours than Bob and Ruth Lamb. When nobody was at my house, they would collect our newpaper and mail, and watch over the house in general. When they would take long trips to Washington state, I would do the same thing and mow the yard, giving the appearance of business as usual. Sadly, within a space of 4 months in 2003, both Bob and Ruth died. I hope the next occupants of that house will be even 1/10 as good neighbours as were the Lambs.

Hanover Tomato Festival

by b1bob

It seems like each small town has a festival for its favourite local crop. South Boston, Virginia has its Cantaloupe Festival; Urbana has its Oyster Festival; West Point (Virginia) has its Crab Fest; and Hanover County has its Tomato Festival. It must be something unique in the soil, but Hanover tomatoes are among the best American tomatoes. They are exported worldwide and receive frequent mention in the Kay Scarpetta series of Patricia Cornwell's books. The Hanover Tomato Festival is held at Pole Green park (where the old East End Elementary School used to be) on the Saturday following the 4th of July (U.S. Independence Day). Somebody asked me not too long before I put up this tip whether we threw tomatoes at each other like they do annually in this little town in Spain. No, we love our tomatoes. We cut them up and put them in salads, spaghetti sauces, pies, and we even fry some of our green ones.

At the Hanover Tomato Festival, there were a bunch of tents and stands grouped together selling food. Some sold hot dogs, others sold hamburgers and chicken, but there were some more exotic tents selling gyros (I always get mine without that bloody white sauce), Italian Polish style sausages, and even Philly cheese steaks. On this hot day in July, bottled water and lemonade were available.

As a nod to Hanover County's agricultural heritage, a row of old tractors was put on display at the tomato festival. Only the central part of the county has urbanised. Fortunately, the extreme eastern part of the county and western Hanover still are agricultural in nature and carry on growing those Hanover tomatoes.

A row of antique cars was on display here as well. The one that caught my eye was a 1930s Model A Ford delivery truck. The American flag flying on its front bumper only has 48 stars because from 1912-1959 that was the number of states we had. These classics were older, but not as plentiful, colourful and impressive as the ones at the Virgilina Summerfest.

U.S. Senator George Allen came in 2006.

Pole Green Skate Park

by b1bob

At all points in the year, not just during the Tomato Festival, Pole Green Park offers a skate park. This was designed to find an appropriate place for young folks to roller blade and skateboard without harassing local merchants whose sidewalks were full of roller bladers and skateboarders beforehand. Skates, rollerblades, skateboard, shin guards, and helmets.
