Running at the Maritime Museum
I understand that one of the best running venues in Newport News is the Mariner's Museum's, Noland Trail complex. This was a gift from Mr Noland who willed the property to the City. The 5 mile running trail follows the outline of the lake. It is hard packed gravel and there are wooden foot bridges for runners to use. It can be extended by running on the roads nearby Lions Bridge. Although I am not a runner (and not even a walker most of the time), I have heard that if you are from out of town, and want a great run, this is it!
The Mariners’ Museum holds a 10K run on the Noland Trail every September. Proceeds from the 10K (6.2 miles) run support park maintenance. Approximately 300 runners from Hampton Roads race on the Noland Trail. Lake and Park Rules for Your Safety and Convenience
Museum Maintenance and Protection Services staff members are in the park at various times. Feel free to seek them out if you have questions or need assistance. The following rules were established to protect both the lake and park environments, and to help keep our pleasant, family atmosphere.
1. Motorcycles, bicycles, and trail bikes are not permitted on The Noland Trail. For the safety of visitors and for environmental reasons, no fires of any kind are permitted
2. For the comfort of all park visitors and the protection of wildlife, dogs must be on leashes at all times. Please be sure to clean up after your pet.
3. Do not litter. Trash cans are located throughout the park for the convenience of visitors.
