lunch between Richmond airport and Norfolk airport on Rt. 5

by mhughu

I have around 6 hours to get from Richmond airport to Norfolk airport, so I thought I'd go the scenic way.

Any funky or good home cooking places for lunch I should know about?

Thanks,

mhughu

>what's the weather like in February? snow?

It is not unheard of for the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area to get snow, but it doesn't happen very often. When it does, it's not very much. Ice can also be an issue, and is more dangerous for driving than snow, but again doesn't happen very often. Keep up on the weather forecast at weatherunderground.com.

>How far is DC (sightseeing-white house, etc.)?

DC at best is 3-3.5 hours away. Realistically with traffic it is 4-4.5 hours drive. It is possible to take Amtrak instead, but the last stop on the line is Newport News/Hampton. I would not do DC as a daytrip. If you really want to go, dedicate at least one night's stay. February can be a pretty dead time for tourists, and you might be able to get some great hotel deals on Priceline.com. You can research what other people are getting for their successful bids at BiddingForTravel.com.

>how far is new york?

I've actually never made this drive. My friends who have tell me it is 7-8 hours. But going back to your first question, as you head north, the risk of snow & ice really increases. If you really want to go to NYC, I would probably fly out of Norfolk (ORF) or Newport News (PHF).

>where is the best site to get a really good deal on airplane tickets?

My favorite is Kayak.com. It will search many travel sites at once and is a great tool for customizing your travel details (i.e. no red eyes, length of layovers, etc.). There's also FareCompare.com and Vayama.com.

Thanks care824 for the info! We went ahead and purchased on expedia.com.
Yeah, we might have to rethink about going to New York, originally we were going to drive....

Travel Tips for Norfolk

Last of Its Kind: USS Wisconsin

by Tom_Fields

The Iowa-class battleship USS Wisconsin was commissioned in 1944, during World War II. This was the last true battleship ever built. Serving with distinction in the last campaigns of the Pacific War, the ship also saw action in the Korean War and the 1991 Persian Gulf War. By the end of its long career, the Wisconsin had been modified, with new Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. That was in addition to the massive 16-inch cannons. One of these can lob a shell weighing a ton and a half (about equal in weight to a VW Beetle) over 20 miles.

The ship was also heavily armored. And, with its narrow beam, it was very fast, with a top speed well over 30 knots. They can't build them like this any more.

Unfortunately, visitors can only tour the ship's top deck. Everything below that is still off-limits. But it's well worth it. Admission is free with a ticket to the Nauticus Center.

My college destination

by ThatGuyB

This is where I went to college - Old Dominion University. What a great school. Less than half and hour from the beach, lots of bars, lots of young people. On the downside, there is lots of traffic. The new mall - MacArthur center, is very upscale, with tons of specialty shops. The development around the center is amazing.
