Hampton Roads Naval Museum
During the Civil War, between Norfolk and Hampton Roads, one of the most historic events in naval warfare took place. It was the first clash ever between ironclad warships. The Union's USS Monitor took on the Confederate vessel CSS Virginia. Neither vessel inflicted serious damage on the other; at this point, armor had advanced more that cannons. Naval combat has never been the same since.
The Hampton Roads Naval Museum covers the history of the US Navy, from colonial days to the present. Here is a great collection of models and memorabilia. Not to be missed, it's located inside the Nauticus Center.
