RE: Richmond to Charlottesville?

The bus station is about 10 miles west of the Richmond airport. You should be able to catch a bus from there to C'ville, about an hour's drive west. It looks like the fare would be $19 but unfortunately there may not be a bus until that evening.

What day will you be flying into Richmond?

Travel Tips for Richmond

Churches

by zrim

Richmond is home to several splendid churches. Everywhere you look steeples frame the skyline.

On Capitol Square St. Paul's Episcopal Church adds to the historic tableau. Both Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis frequented this church for Sunday services.

It was built between 1844-45 in the Greek Revival style which makes it a good match for the State Capitol Building, Old City Hall and the Governor's Mansion.

Vantage point 1: Church Hill

by b1bob

There is a steep rise between Franklin and Grace Streets east of Shockoe Bottom and downtown. Climb that hill, turn left onto Grace Street. At the intersection of 22d and Grace Street is the old (1968-2000) WRVA radio station (they merely moved to the West End). Park the car and go to the edge of the hill and take in this photographic vantage point. The views are even more breathtaking at night.

Filipino Festival

by b1bob

Many outsiders to Richmond might find it hard to believe, but there is a rather large Filipino community here. It is big enough to justify a Filipino Festival at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Richmond's Northside. The first and last thing I saw there was the bamboo foyer. "Mabuhay" means "welcome"; "Salamat" means "thank you." There is plenty of food (you could smell the garlic from the parking lot), but there is also dance and crafts. The food was okay, but I've had better at the now-defunct International Food Festival and at Manila Manila, a local restaurant. I had the pansit which is pan-fried rice noodles to which chicken and vegetables are added. They must have waved mine over a chicken, because I certainly didn't see any meat there. I also had the Filipino satay which consists of pork pieces marinated and slightly charred on bamboo skewers. I love lumpia, the Filipino egg rolls, filled with ground pork, minced onion, carrots, potato, water chestnut, and cooked to a golden brown. I wet back for some chicken barbecue prepared the same way as the pork. The prices were reasonable, but the portions were a little skimpy. The best thing there that day was the cantaloupe drink.

DIRECTIONS from I-95: Merge onto E PARHAM RD / VA-73 S via EXIT 83B. 1.8 mi (2.9 km); Turn LEFT onto LYDELL DR. 0.3 mi (0.5 km); Turn LEFT onto WOODMAN RD. 0.3 mi (0.5 km). Church is at 8200 Woodman Road.

Take as many films as you can or as large memory card as you can - Richmond offers a lot for photography lovers :-).

For pictures at night and/or bad light (weather) and esp. pictures inside Jefferson Hotel (on my picture) take a tripod.

BB & T (old First National Bank) Building

by b1bob

The old First National Bank Building was one of the first high-rise buildings in Richmond (built in 1913). It helped create the skyline of Richmond and dominated it for almost 40 years and was the tallest building in town for almost 20. The building is still a landmark structure along Main Street and has been placed on the National Register of Historic places. BB&T and several other tenants occupy this building today. Because Lee works for BB&T and occasionally works at this downtown office when called to do it, he was able to get us in to see the architecture from the inside. The old First National vault is used for display and several movies have been filmed here and feature the vault.
