Travel Tips for Richmond

Virginia's Seal - Sic Semper Tyrannis

by ATXtraveler

Virginia's official state seal has the Latin phrase Sic Semper Tyrannis, or "thus ever (or always) to tyrants." It is often misinterpreted as "Death to Tyrants", and both seem fairly applicable to this state which was instrumental in shaping the United States of America. The original phrase was attributed to Marcus Brutus in the time of Julius Caesar, but was given to the Virginia Convention in 1776 by George Mason (long before his basketball team reached the final four). If you would like to see this particular seal, it is located in the Virginia Capital Extension.

The old CNB building

by b1bob

At one time, the old CNB building was the tallest building in the city until the Federal Reserve building and the Monroe building were built. The thing that made the Central National Bank building stand out was at night. When the weather was clear, the letters "CNB" were green. When the weather was rainy or stormy, the letters were red. Under foggy conditions, they were white. I can't find any night photos of CNB yet. The bank closed years ago and the tall building remains vacant.

Do not move it, please!

by matcrazy1

The Museum of the Confederacy (modern building and old White House of the Confederacy) is located at the heart of Richmond's downtown, in the shadow of tall and modern building of Virginia Commenwealth University (VCU) Medical Center (on my picture).

The Museum announced recently that it might move out the downtown area because the hospital could expand. That got local attention. I can't believe it. I am sure that local community will never allow anyone to move jewels and must see activities out of downtown. Well, later on during my trip I saw some houses (mainly old, wooden cabin logs) moved from their original locations to... touristy downtowns of cities, but never in the opposite direction. My opinion is: Do not move it, please!

Richmond International Raceway

by b1bob

Richmond has a Winston Cup (major league in American auto racing or NASCAR jargon) race track on Laburnum Avenue just to the northeast of downtown. Richmond Internatioal Raceway (known locally as R.I.R.) holds two Winston Cup races in a season- one in April and one in September. Between the NASCAR races it hosts lesser auto racing events. When the wind is right, I can hear the action at the racetrack from my own back yard 5 miles (8 km.) away. It is important to note that there are two major races here- one the first weekend in May and the other the second weekend in September. On those weekends, hotels will be terribly hard to book. Also, if you're in Richmond on those weekends, but not for the race, try to avoid Laburnum Avenue (which is where the racetrack is located). If Laburnum Avenue can't be avoided, while you are on that road, keep your headlights on by day, so that police can more easily direct the heavy traffic.

Historical land of... Mechanicsville

by matcrazy1

Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy was not captured by the Union till the end of the Civil War. But Richmond was in danger in 1862. The second in the series of American Civil War battles known as the Seven Days' Battles took place along Beaver Dam Creek, just east of Mechanicsville. The Seven Days Campaign, or Seven Days Battle, of the American Civil War was a great success of the Confederate commander Robert E. Lee. He managed to turn back the Union general George McClellan's Army of the Potomac River and saved Richmond in June 1862.

The battle is called Battle of Beaver Dam Creek (also known by the names Mechanicsville and Ellerson's Mill) and is commemorated by the sign: look here. A small portion of the battlefield has been preserved as part of the Richmond National Battlefield Park.
