Moving to Richmond
by alhodge
I am moving to Richmond and know very little about the city or the area. The company I'll be with is located by the airport on the east side.
Please provide suggestions as to areas to live - will want to rent an apartment/home for a few months before purchasing so as to understand the area.
Thanks
RE: Moving to Richmond

Sorry for not seeing this earlier. You might want to consider Varina which is in eastern Henrico County where the airport is located. I'm not really that familiar with that side of town (I live in Short Pump in the far west end of Henrico County). Email me directly and we can get a dialogue going. Also feel free to let me know when you'll be in town next and we can meet for coffee or a bite to eat.

Travel Tips for Richmond
One ugly building
by b1bob
This isn't really a fondest memory, folks, but just something that sticks out like a watermelon in a bowlful of chickpeas. I'm not a devotee of architecture, sport fans, but I know an ugly building when I see it. The Markel building wouldn't be so ugly if they didn't bang dents into the steel. It looks like a UFO wrapped in aluminum foil! Seeing aluminum foil wrapped around a baked potato at a restaurant is exactly what inspired the architect to commit this architectural atrocity, which probably could scare kids at night. I don't think the building gives tours, but you can't miss it going on West Broad Street. It's located right behind Extra Billy's Barbecue.
It was named one of the 10 ugliest buildings in the world in 2009 right here on Virtual Tourist and the results revealed in Reuters and Yahoo.com

The Murals of Oregon Hill
by b1bob
To be fair, Oregon Hill isn't the only place in Richmond to find murals. There are plenty near the VCU campus, for example, but these two on the edges of Oregon Hill really stand out. The first one is on the side of the 821 Bakery & Cafe and the other one is alongside a house along Belvidere. What stands out more than the whale mural is that they finished the whale's "tail" above the roof. Richmond is more of an artist-friendly city than many outsiders give it credit for.
Flowering trees
by zrim
The weather was godawful for the two days that I spent in the Commonwealth of Virginia. However, the dogwood, magnolia and cherry trees provided some much needed contrast to the dark and gloomy skies. I've always wanted to visit Washington DC at cherry blossom time. Couldn't fit it into the itinerary this time, but I'm thankful that cities like Richmond, Savannah and Charlottesville have spruced up their parks and boulevards with hundreds, if not thousands, of blooming trees and shrubbery.
Weather, walking shoes... SMILE!
by matcrazy1
For walking around Richmond, small, city backpack and surely bag for your camera - both better water-proof. Comfortable walking shoes preferrably water-resistant: like good trainers or better special walking shoes (one example: Danish Ecco are very comfortable and... expensive but worth the cost).
Sun-glasses esp. in winter and summer and always a rain coat, eventually less comfortable umbrella.

Christopher Newport Cross Monument on the Canal
by Ewingjr98
Captain Christopher Newport was the captain of one of the three ships that originally landed at Jamestown in 1607. He later sailed up the James River to the site of present-day Richmond, on the river's fall line, and erected a cross, claiming the site for King James.
The monument was created in 1907 to mark the 300th anniversary of the event, though it has moved twice before coming to rest in the present location, near the site of the original wooden cross on an island in the river.
The cross is located along the Canal Walk at South 12th and Byrd Streets.
Questions and Answers
Q: Amtrak doesn't allow dogs, so how do we get to DC? "OK, Washington, DC appears to be pet friendly on the Mall and there are hotels in the area that cater to pet owners. We want to..."
A: "Rent a smaller car for the day"
