Various: Innsbrook - A Nice Area to Stay When Visiting

This is a general "where-to-stay" tip because I've seen a lot of forum posts asking what areas are good to stay in various places. Innsbrook is about 10 miles west of downtown Richmond in a newer-developed area. There are several hotels in the Hilton Garden Inn, AmeriSuites, Homewood Suites, Comfort Suites, and Hampton Inn. Within a half-mile or so are the Residence Inn, Marriott Courtyard, Studio Plus, and a Holiday Inn Express.

There is a good concentration of restaurants very nearby on the NW corner of Cox Road and Broad Street in the Innsbrook Shoppes. You have your choice from pub food and a huge beer selection at the Capital Ale House, great breakfasts and sandwiches at Boychicks Deli, Chinese at China Pearl, Indian at Curry House, fast but healthy at Pita Pit, steak at Hondo's, and Mexican at, where else, Mexico.

On the south side of Broad Street at Cox Road there are other eating choices in the Parkside Marketplace (SE corner) in Moe's Southwestern Grill, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Starbuck's, Leonardo's Pizza, and a Haagen Daas ice cream shop. The Colonnades West Shopping Center is on the SW corner and has a Great Taste Chinese buffet.

Need supplies/sundries or just want to hang out and shop? There is a 24-hour CVS pharmacy at the SW corner of Cox and Broad. To the west along Broad Street is a Target and a Kroger supermarket. Further down Broad Street is the Short Pump Town Center with various chain shops and restaurants. There is also the Regal Short Pump multiplex playing the latest Hollywood releases.

In Richmond, if you don't mind the expense stay at the Jefferson. Located in downtown this hotel was built in 1895. It features two great restaurants.

Their Sunday Jazz brunch is not to be missed!

Aloft Richmond West: ... and I thought Charlotte was growing

Set in the city's hot new West Broad Village lifestyle center this very modern new hotel is surrounded by chic shops, fine dining, and more all within easy reach of nearby offices and downtown Richmond. Unfortunately, when I was there last November most of those shops were not yet finished and the entire "lifestyle center" closed by about 9 PM. Rarely do I go to bed hungry, so I did eventually call for pizza delivery but it was slow and expensive and not particularly good but my puppy and I did not go to bed hungry.
The hotel is PET FRIENDLY.
Other than being rather expensive and too modern for my taste it is a nice hotel but even in trying to check in and out, they very obviously cater to the younger set. I might stay there again but probably not.
It is January, 2012, and, upon returning to Richmond, we did in fact stay at the Aloft. My primary purpose for selecting this hotel was that I knew it to be PET FRIENDLY and did not want to drive all over Richmond seeking a hotel which would welcome us both at a lower cost. There were both pluses and minuses to staying here again. We stayed in the exact same room as we had before which was very conveniently located for walking Pounder and there is more completed "lifetime center" than we found in November of 2010, although there is still a ways to go. They were also less accommodating this time than they had been the first time. Previously, they presented us with a bag of doggie treats without my asking. This time there were none. Upon returning home, I read an ad stating that they offer free bottled water to guests but there were no apparent announcements to that effect anywhere within the hotel.

The most unique thing about this hotel was that it was virtually impossible to find. I have lived in Richmond two different times and in the West End both times so I thought that I knew the area but even after seeing their sign on the side of the building, I had to literally drive around it three times before I could find an access point and then a couple more times before I could find their parking lot.
This hotel was more easily accessible this time than on our earlier visit but I cannot be certain whether that was due to better signage or to the fact that I had been there before. I tend to think that it was due to the latter option.

Holiday Inn Express Richmond Downtown

Holiday Inn Express is located about a mile west of the Shockoe Slip area of Richmond, though it is easy to get from the hotel to this entertainment area: straight downhill on Cary Street. The hotel is pretty nice, with big rooms, a fitness center, and wi-fi. Parking is in a well-lit garage under the hotel for $10 a night.

Prices are usually $150 to $200, but I booked o ur room on Priceline for about $65+ fees ($80).

The hotel also has a nice complimentary breakfast with coffee, juices, cinnamon rolls, cheddar omelets, sausage, biscuits, fruit, cereal and more. It was much better than your average free hotel breakfast.

Hilton Garden Inn - Richmond / Innsbrook: Good corporate hotel

A perfectly comfortable hotel with very friendly staff, the Hilton Garden Inn in the Innsbrook district of Richmond (far west end) is a good alternative for business travel. I stayed here for 3 nights this week - the room was very spacious, with full cable (70 channels), central AC, a small refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker. The hotel has the usual small gym, but also adds a small swimming pool and spa to the ammenities. A pantry right next to the front desk covers some last minute needs, but just in case there's a CVS in the corner where you can get snack and other sundries at better prices.

The other great feature is the free high speed internet access in the rooms - the speed was great with barely a slowdown at peak time (around 7-8 PM) but much better than some of the cable modem systems you have in other hotels. There's a remote printing capability as well, where you can send a document to the printer in the business center downstairs for free - a great convenience

I didn't try their breakfast but it seemed decent - the usual assortment of breakfast buffet items. There's plenty of quick food options in the immediate area as well as some bigger restaurants. There's also a gas station right around the corner, great for filling up before heading for the airport.

The only blemish - the shower wasnt too good, pressure was on the skimpy side and the shower head seemed to be a bit busted. I am sure I could have had it replaced though...

Very clean, new, free high speed internet, free document printing. Small swimming pool in the facilities.
