How to get there...

by baldurontour

Hi VTlers,

I need some help, as it seemes difficult to find reliable information on the internet.

What would be your best suggestion to get to Roanke from Germany?
There is no direct flight, so what combination will be most reasonable?

Fly Frankfurt New York then onwards?
Fly Frankfurt Washington...?

Thank you for any kind of suggestion or personal experience.

B.

Hi - you have a few options. US Airways connects Philadelphia, United connects in Washington, Delta connects in Atlanta. Check www.skyscanner.com, www.travelocity.com, www.expedia.com to see who offers the best rates and timings for you. Then check the specific airlines' websites for pricing. Good luck.

"Best" is relative. It would be easiest and likely quickest to fly directly in to Roanoke. However, it's not a large airport, so it's probably going to be more expensive.
Washington, DC would be the closest large airport, but you would have to rent a car or take a bus to get to Roanoke. A bus would be especially time-consuming and difficult.

You do not have to take a bus from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Roanoke. There is an airport in Roanoke that connects, as Donna mentioned, to a number of major international airports that have service from Frankfurt. My search engine of choice for flights is Kayak.com, but you can use pretty much any of them to find the best choice from a cost/schedule perspective. The airport code for Roanoke is ROA.

Travel Tips for Roanoke

Historic Signs

by HotSpotJ

Roanoke has held some things in its downtime area very sacred over the years, most notably, some of the advertising signs from the 50's and 60's. There were preservation groups formed in the last decade to raise money for some of these signs to be restored, oddly enough the only reason most of them are still there is because this town was too old fashioned and unchanged for decades to even remodel the building in its downtown area. If you will walk around the downtown area you will see many signs from the 50's and 60'd still dispalyed, from soda ads to coffee signs.

Millionaires Club

by HotSpotJ about Texas Tavern

This place is an absolute must-eat if you are in downtown Roanoke. The food is not the best unless your night has involved some type of alcoholic consumption, and then this menu appears as appeasing as an oasis would to a man stranded in the desert. It has been here since sometime in the 30's I believe, and has been grandfathered past about every known legality we have in the food industry. On vacation I have met people from my hometown and one of the first things they mention is the Texas Tavern. My usual order- bowl with and cheesy with, coke. You NEVER say chili here, just say bowl with or without (onions) and a cheesy with is a cheesy western with onions. I'm not saying this food is going to help your chances of living into a ripe old age, but you have to eat here at least once
