I keep hearing that beautiful Roanoke has a serious air quality problem with ozone and possibly other things.
Can anyone comment? What's causing the problem, and is it getting better or worse?

I live in Vermont and go down through there to visit my sister in Florida every year since 1990. I've noticed the increase in the haze and also a huge increase in truck traffic. I'll bet that was part of the answer you received.
A local place to go on lazy weekends is the Peaks of Otter, about 25 minutes or so from downtown Roanoke. It is a good hike, and also has a scenic lake and great lodge at the base, so whether you live or or are just visiting make sure you check it out, the view from the top is impressive.
Of all the places at Valley View Mall here in Roanoke, I like Shakers the most... the crowd here is more discerning (sometimes TGIFridays has too many knuckelheads at the bar), and I love the redesigned bar with a number of televisions and a great drink and food menu. My fav is the Cheesy chicken and mushroom.
