There are numerous AT trailheads in the area. Tinker Cliffs, McAphee's Knob, and Dragon's Tooth are all some of the more famous and beautiful sites on the trail, and all of these trailheads can be reached by car in 30 minutes or less. Email me for more details and directions.
Learn about local history at the Explore Park
Explore Park is a park that features a collection of buildings from various eras in Western Virginia's history. Some of the buildings are original and some are copies of the original buildings. The park features an Indian village, a frontier fort, a 19th century farmhouse and barn, a one-room schoolhouse, a grist mill, and an old country church. You tour the buildings in historical order, starting with the Indian village and ending in the 1800s. At each building, there is a park employee in period costume who discusses their building and its historical era. To tour the entire collection, including listening to each of the presentations, will take about 2-3 hours and involve about 1.5 miles of walking.
UNFORTUNATELY, EXPLORE PARK RAN OUT OF FUNDING AND WAS FORCED TO CLOSE. AT THIS TIME, WE DO NOT KNOW IF IT WILL REOPEN OR NOT.
