Loft Mountain Campground: Camping with a view
Loft Mountain Campground is the largest and southernmost campground in the park. It's actually atop Big Flat Mountain, the tenth highest peak in the park, but apparently park founders felt that Loft Mountain was a more attractive name. The campgrounds at Shenandoah fill up in a snap on summer weekends, so if you're planning on camping in the park during that time, your best bet is to head to Loft, as it's a bit farther from the popular sights of the park's central section and has so many sites.
The campground is fairly well maintained, with numerous and clean restrooms and water. There's a good deal of privacy for most campsites, and good views (and little privacy) for others. G Loop has sites near the very summit of Big Flat and views to the north, but sites there are fairly open and small. As of 2011, sites were $15 per night. 20% of the sites in this campground can be reserved, while 80% are kept as first come-first served.
Unique Quality: The views from some sites at Loft are incredible. The campground is situated right next to the Appalachian Trail, so some hikers may find this campground to be particularly convenient.

DELUXE BUDGET MOTEL: Just off Skyline Drive
Sunday, October 24, 2010
As it was getting near the end of the day, we needed to get off Skyline Drive and look for a Motel. I checked out my Motel Discount Coupon Book and decided we would stay overnight in Waynesboro. We picked the DELUXE BUDGET MOTEL as it was economical, ($38.00), clean and they had free high speed internet access for Hansi.
Amenities included:
TV with Cable and HBO
High Speed Internet Access
Microwave
Refrigerator
Free local calls

Comfort Suites: Waynesboro, VA
At the south end of the park lies Waynesboro, VA. We stayed here at the Comfort Suites. The hotel was in pretty good shape, and the rates were in the $65 range - not bad for the high end of the Comfort Inn chains. The rooms were clean and quiet, and there are plenty of dining options within a short driving distance (as well as one or two in walking distance.) The continental breakfast was decent, with a selection of cereals, donuts, and a waffle maker. The park is only about 10 minutes away.

Quality Inn: Charlottlesville, VA
The first and last night of our road trip we stayed at the Quality Inn in Charlottesville, Va. There rooms were average and typical of what you would expect.
Ask for a non-smoking room if that you don't like the smell of stale cigs or bring a travel candle.
There were about 4 other economy type hotels in the same vicinity. (Days Inn, Econo Lodge, etc.)
Unique Quality: There is a pool(I think) and gym.

A nice clean motel with an Outdoor Pool and a Continental Breakfast. It is adjacent to the South River Restaurant, Shoney's Breakfast Buffet, and Wendy's.
