More about Stonewall Jackson Hotel
Very good time at Stonewall Jackson Hotel
We went ot Staunton for just an overnight trip to enjoy this beautiful and historic city. We chose the Stonewall Jackson Hotel because of its good reviews here and its website with pictures and information, and we were not disappointed. Everything was great!
Check-in went very smooth - the manager was very professional and on the ball, and so were most of all the other staff we encountered. I asked for a room in the old portion, but the double room that we needed is only in the new wing - but that turned out fine since the new wing is built very similar to the old renovated portion of the hotel - only the rooms are larger in the new wing! The room was very attractive, comfortable, clean, had a great bathroom, and fine view of the city.
Parking is in the attached garage and cost $4, which was not bad compared to $30 in Washington, DC.
The indoor pool is very nice, although there is no locker room. A large bathroom is nearby and handy for changing. The exercise room was large and looked well-equipped, and looked out over the pool. The pool is in the lower level so it had no windows - which would have been nice, but everything was new and working (including a great hot tub adjacent to the pool) so had no complaints.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel and it was good. I did find a hair stuck to my bacon, which grossed my wife and daughter out, but did not bother me too much, the waitress took it off my bill. She did have a rather unprofessional manner - which some training could possibly help. I would eat there again.
By-the-way, we ate supper at the local drive-in legend called Wright's Dairy Rite and it was great. Get the onion rings - excellent. We all 3 ate our fill of great Diner food for only $16 total! What a deal, plus you could even walk there from the hotel.
The visitor's center is located in the adjacent garage and the Blackfiars Theater is right next door. Everything is easy walking distance to the hotel (with a few hills for a good workout.) The trolley goes thoughout the city and is free, so take it for an overview and then go back where you want to explore more on foot. We had a blast. Don't neglect to explore some of the fine old neighborhoods, full of great houses and gardens.
I recommend the Stonewall Jackson Hotel highly - affordable elegance in a charming city.
What a find!!
My husband and I were attending a conference at the hotel. We used tripadvisor as a start and when booking we got a great rate plus free parking!!
The conference said we would get a $99 per nite rate. Well, with Priceline we got an $88 rate plus free parking (which is usually $4 per nite.)
The hotel has been restored and is in the middle of a great area of town. The shops and restaurants are great. There is a free trolley to go around town. Take it to see the entire town.
The rooms are quite nice. The archhitecture has been fully restored.
The beds are comfortable and have down comforters.
There is a flat screen tv and free wifi.
The bathroom is so clean and has toiletries, huge towels, and a coffeemaker.
There is a hair dryer also and an iron and iron board.
The hotel is quiet. The staff is friendly also.
This is a wonderful hotel.
Fun Times in VA!
MY husband booked this hotel for 2 nights for our one year wedding anniversary. We originally wanted to go to Charlottesville, but ended up in Staunton. I was definitely unsure since I had never heard of this town before, but I'm so glad we stayed here.
The historic part of Staunton is adorable. It's a town that is easily walkable and there are many cute stores and little cafes. We arrived after 5pm on a Sunday and everything was closed however. The restaurant in the Mill across from the hotel was delicious! We weren't impressed with the cheesy decoration and our expectations were quite low, but we were surprised! Our food was yummy.
The hotel is very pretty and seemed quite empty while we were there, which we liked as it was peaceful for us. Our room was quite small, but nicely decorated. There were photographs all over the hotel by Barry Wolfe, and it started to drive us insane seeing his name printed largely and rather prominantly in the corner of all the pictures! But we're a little bonkers :)
While we were in the area we went wine tasting at Cardinal Point Vineyards (highly reccomend) and Kings Family Vineyarrd. There are lots and lots of vineyards in the area along with Monticello, UVA, and Charlottesville. You'll definitely be able to keep busy for a few days or just take it easy and stroll around Staunton!
Clean, quiet, comfortable, great location
We stayed here on the recommendations of other trip advisor reviewers. Rooms are good, beds are firm with a good pillowtop matress. Bathrooms are clean and neat. Staff are friendly. Nice walking to nearby restaurants.
A great weekend
The hotel is excellent, if a bit sterile (a 1920s hotel recently restored, there is some post-modern decor that does not quite work), and the rooms are a bit small (typical of that era hotel though). On the other hand, spotlessly clean, very friendly staff, grand lobby, and a superb location. Staunton is a really wonderful weekend trip, and the hotel is located immediately next door to the Shakespeare Theatre, which is excellent. Skip dining at the hotel and eat in downtown Staunton, which has excellent restaurants and boutique shopping. You can walk to everything.
We stayed at this hotel before and found it to be quite nice. Since it's renovation the hotel has become a very nice place to stay.
Our recent visit was over the Christmas holidays and we had a nice room with nice service.
We can't say enough nice things about this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. With so many nice restaurants in Staunton to dine at we didn't eat at the hotel except for breakfast.
The pool is indoors and in the basement, but we found it very relaxing with very few people around. The pool is heated, the hot tub is very hot and the room small but all in all nice.
We will stay here again soon.
Stayed at the Stonewall Jackson for 2 nights. The lobby is elegant and the room was very clean. Walking distance to some great restaurants and shops. The staff members were extremely courteous and helpful. Definitely worth the price.
How a top quality hotel should be run . Wonderful hotel with very helpful & cheerful staff . Walking distance to everything . A free trolley service also runs around the town ,well worth a ride. We went on an over night package which included tickets to see a play at The Blackfriers Shakespeare Theatre Romeo & Juliet ...Excellent actors, great venue right next door to the hotel ... . The hotel gets the tickets for you great idea . Breakfast also included . Good value .
The room was very clean ,comfortable especially the bed.A/c was good shame the window was painted shut ...fresh air would have been sweet as well
The hotel pool is indoor & in the basement . The pool is a good size & very well maintained .The fitness room is very well appointed with a TV.
We didn't have dinner in the hotel but went to the Mill St. Grill a short walk from the hotel...wonderful BBQ very varied menu with specials .Don't be put off by the outside wearhouse like apperance it is well worth a try ..Ribs were great . Also go to Sunspots the glass blowing shop great hand blown glass at very fair prices . The Visitors info office was excellent very helpful & informative about the town & area .All in all Staunton is a great place for a weekend break or longer. The Blue Ridge Mountain region of VA is a joy to behold
