HELP WITH FINDING HOTEL!!!

by jayme0821

We will be in Virgina Beach the 3rd week of July. I have been going crazy trying to find a nice hotel (on the beach). Being as I have never been there, it is almost impossible to choose somewhere to stay. I will be with my family, which includes a 16-year-old, a 10 and 11-year-old, and my husband. I would really prefer to be close to different activities, but not necessarily in the "heart" of everything. I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you so much.

The "heart" of everything runs about 25-30 blocks so you have many choices. Without knowing your budget expectations, it's hard to recommend something to you. Have you tried reading user reviews on Expedia/Orbitz/Travelocity for the hotels you've narrowed it down to? You'll probably get much more accurate info for cleanliness, location, etc.

Alternatively, you can get waterfront accomodations on Shore Drive (on the bay vs. the Atlantic). This will put you a 10-15 minute drive from the hubbub of the main strip. It's quieter and a little less crowded on the beach in this area. But if your children will be wanting to go "do stuff" :) then staying on the main strip is easier as you can just walk. Parking on the main strip if you're not a hotel guest or a resident can be a little tricky if you're wanting to avoid paying the high prices of the private pay lots.

I would recommend calling the va beach visitor's center 1-800-VA-BEACH. They don't make reservations, but would be able to help you find something reasonable and sometimes the hotels call and give them their rates/availability. A lot of times, the family owned hotels will be less expensive than the chains...try Beach Thunderbird, Belvedere, Schooner, Flagship, or Diplomat. They're all clean, nice places either on the beach or across the street.

Travel Tips for Virginia Beach

how many lights can you do.....

by davecallahan

There is a local contest to see how many lights you can drive through (staying within the speed limit) before you get a red light.

The contest takes place on US60 (Atlantic Avenue/ Pacific Avenue) anywhere from 82nd Street to 6th Street.
I have done 12 lights from 36th Street to 22nd Street.

Try it when you get there. Sounds easy but it is harder than it sounds (no running-a-red either).

Wildlife

by bugalugs

After we had crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel we didnt really have any where in mind to visit, but I had read about the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge and on leaving the Bridge its only a couple of miles up the road.
However when we arrived it was early evening and the visitors centre was closed.
The hours of opening are:
April - October - Daily - 9.-4pm
November & March - open daily 10-2pm
December, January and February Open friday - Sunday only 10-2pm

Memphis BBQ

by grandmaR about Beale Street Restaurant

We asked for recommendations from the Ft. Story Inn and got several. We decided to drive back towards Norfolk until we came to one that we liked. We went to dinner at the Beale St. BBQ, and each had a wet half rack of ribs with two sides for $10.95 each (I had cole slaw and beans and rice, and Bob had cole slaw and potato salad). And we shared a 'pig picking cake' for dessert. It had coconut icing. I ate the icing off and then decided I was full, so Bob ate the cake part so that it wouldn't go to waste. The total bill was $38.43 counting tip and two iced teas. Rachael Ray ($40/day) has nothing on us.

The Jewish Mother

The Jewish Mother
This place is really cool.. with live entertainment every night, a huge selection of international beers, and its located near the oceanfront. The Jewish Mother's menu is unbelievable. Something here for everyone.

Old Coastguard Station

by bugalugs

This old coast guard station is now a museum. It was built in 1903 and has exhibits on shipwrecks off the Virginian coast. It also features an exhibition of the WWII Battle of the Atlantic.
It is open all year except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day
Its about $3 admission
