Chesapeake/Norfolk

by sistahmoon

Greetings,

I posted this question before but I don't know where the heck it went. Anyway, I currently live in Charlotte, NC and need to get the hell out. I relocated here from Chicago 2 years ago after a layoff and although I've grown to love the South, I miss the diversity, art, food and culture of the North.

Now that my job, which is the main reason that I've remained here, my be downsized in the next couple of months, I've started to look to other southern cities as viable relocation options. I've heard great things about southern VA and would like to get some feedback. I work in community corrections with an emphasis on substance abuse prevention. I'm 46, single, african-american, female, childless, artistic and pretty liberal in my spirituality and politics.

If you can shed some light on the MD/VA area, I'd appreciate it. I probably need to make a decision by the end of July.

Thanks!

RE: Chesapeake/Norfolk

Virginia is not a bad choice. Norfolk/Virginia Beach has a number of museums, opera and play houses, but it still retains a lot of the small town feel. It is not the epicenter of art, culture or cuisine, but they do have enough to offer that you won't feel completely bereft of culture.

Another option you might want to explore is Atlanta. There is a triving food culture here, diversity that Virginia Beach can't begin to imagine and lots of arts and entertainment. The biggest downers to Atlanta (in my opinion) is the traffic is very bad and the city planners forgot to put it next to the ocean.

Travel Tips for Virginia Beach

Talk to the Locals!

by gijane213

Despite one of the locals on here that claim they do not like tourists, talk to the locals about what there is to do in VA Beach. My family got a lot of great tips on where to go to rent bikes or buy a cruise because it was a lot cheaper than the what brochures in the lobby advertised!

The Blue Ridge Mountains

by Goner

The Blue Ridge Mountains are the easternmost range of the Appalachian Mountains that extends from northern Georgia to North Carolina and into Virginia and West Virginia. Most Blue Ridge peaks are between 2,000 and 4,000 ft.. There is a plethora of parks to visit along these mountains and for complete information stop at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center which is located at- Parkway Milepost 115, (540) 427-5871. Open seasonally for detailed Parkway information. Or visit the website listed below.

The mountains are dotted with B & B’s and lodges, so lodging is never far away. There are miles and miles of nature walks, lakes, streams and beautiful vistas. Besides water activities, horseback riding is a favorite . A great introduction to the area is a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway which affords the most spectacular views of the mountains.

Great Country Breakfast!

by N_philly about Old Country Pancake House

If you like a down home country breakfast where everything is make from scratch, this is definitely the place for you. This cute little restaurant has a shabby chic "General Store" decor. You'll see anything from old advertising signs, farm equipment, early kitchen appliances, old scooters and more. Somewhat like Cracker Barrel but with more of a homey feel, like in grandma's kitchen. We ate breakfast here 3 days in a row! In my opinion Angi is the best waitress there she has a wonderful personality and is very attentive. It's not a classy place but the food is great! Everything!!!

Pancakes
Freanch Toast
Eggs
Sausage
Bacon
Ham
Grits
Biscuts & gravy
Hash Browns
Fruit & more!!!

Virginia Marine Science Museum

Shows water fowl, plants and animals of the area. Nice place to relax when it is raining on a hot summer day. Get to pet a sting ray. They are so soft! Be sure to check out a movie in the Imaxx theater while you are there.
