Avoiding the Tunnel
by bluedove1978getty
How can I get to Virginia Beach from Winchester, VA without using the Chesapeake Tunnel? I remember going through it when I was little, now not sure I can handle it?
Re: Avoiding the Tunnel
by olddude
Is it the tunnel or the bridge you fear? No need to cross the Chesapeake at all unless you plan on going through Delaware. The easiest way to get there is via the Monitor-Merrimack Bridge Tunnel on RT664 or the Hampton Roads Tunnel on 64. Both are a lot shorter than the Chesapeake Tunnel. You could also go south of Richmond on 95 and then take 460 to back to Route 64 and drive around Norfolk, and avoid tunnels all together, but that road is crap and takes you about 70 miles out of the way. If you pick up 64 out of Stanton (if you take 81 that far south), then you will have to cross one of the bridge tunnels I mentioned above. If someone knows a better way, I am sure they will respond.

If you are coming from the south take route 58 to the Monitor Merrimack Bridge. As Olddude says though it really depends on where you are traveling from.

I guess you are referring to the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel which is very long between the Eastern Shore of Va and Virginia Beach?
Hard not to go thru a tunnel to get here - There is the Route 64 tunnel - probably the best bet comming from Winchester.
If you really hate tunnels, maybe you should just head to the Outer Banks of NC - another 1.5 hours way.
Travel Tips for Virginia Beach
Make sure you get an ocean...
by caraynix
Make sure you get an ocean front room with a balcony, so you can sit, relax and enjoy watching the ocean and all the people going by on the boardwalk. Another really enjoyable and relaxing thing to do with your family (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg) is to rent a bike and ride on the bike trail that is right alongside the boardwalk. My family and I had a great time doing this every day that we were there. I really enjoyed being able to step out of my motel room and just stand or sit and watch the water, listen to the waves, and watch the people going by (at all times of the day or night). I really miss the ocean itself. Life is so hectic most of the time, and there was something very tranquil and calming about the sound and site of the waves. They reminded me of just how constant and dependable our Heavenly Father (the One who created them to begin with) really is!!!! GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO READS THIS! I hope you all know the constant, calming presence of our Loving Creator.

Good Sushi
by dln6874 about This Old House
Friendly owner/sushi chef. Tiny quaint place in a quiet shopping center. They have an interesting salmon good-to-go roll. It's salmon sushi with cooked sushi on top with a special mildly spicy sauce.

Stroll on the Oceanfront Boardwalk
by butterflykizzez04
Virginia Beach takes lots of pride in its boardwalk area. It is very nice. There is a very wide area for strolling, rollerblading and pushing baby carriages.
Then there is a two lane track running parallel for bikes and tandoms.
This boardwalk is very nice and lined with vendors in season and also plenty of benches for people and beach watching.
