This is camping? For the record, I hate camping. A Holiday Inn without room service is camping. So what could make me stay in a campground? First Landing could.

It's a little known secret that the Commonwealth rents beautiful 2BR/full kitchen cabins in some of its parks. This park, with its own beach just inside the mouth of Hampton Roads, is a getaway dream. Though the cabins are rustic, the setting is gorgeous and the park staff friendly and knowlegable.

Unique Quality: Each cabin has 2BR(sleeps 4), full kitchen, living room with fireplace, heat & A/C, screened porch, rustic bath with shower, large outdoor deck with BBQ grill, and parking for 2. There are no TV's, but reception is good if you bring a portable. The cabins are spaced well, guarenteeing privacy, and are patrolled regularly by the rangers.

There are lots of organized activities for the kids, miles of bike trails (with rentals), a museum, a camp store, and laundry. (There is no pool.) Restaurants are within a mile or two and downtown Virginia Beach is a ten-minute drive.

The park's beach is a long sandy stretch of shore just inside Cape Henry, so it is technically not on the ocean and wave action is minimal. Dogs are permitted in the cabins and on the beach (leashed). Tent and RV camping is available also, with some sites right on the water.

NOTE: Virginia non-residents pay approximately 33% higher rates. Rates below are for a summer night for a cabin for a Virginia resident. Cabins only available weekly in summer.
