Topaz Hotel

We enjoyed the TOPAZ in April '04, and choose it after reading reviews here on tripadvisor. It was our first visit to D.C. It is a small Hotel, no fancy lobby or overall appearances, a small bar, but our room was wonderful. Very clean, cleverly decorated. The employees were always helpful whenever we spoke to them. Our reservation was made on line and there were no glitches. There is valet parking. If there was a disappointment it was the bar. We read it was a top spot and unusual, but we found it pretty ordinary, other then some not so ordinary decorating. Also, the subway wasn't too far away either. If you like this area of D.C., and just want a nice room by all means, great place. Smith and Lewinsky's Steak House nearby, and 5 star dining at the Mayflower Hotel!! If your driving, catch N street off Connecticut, the one way streets are a challenge for a first timer.

Excellent

I chose this hotel after reading the reviews on trip advisor. I did lots of research on many of the hotels in D.C. It was an excellent hotel. Small boutique hotel in quiet area of town. Staff was very friendly, the room was very large and the price was very reasonable. The bed was very comfortable. The location was great. Dupont Circle has many restaurants and some bars all within walking distance. The area is safe to walk at night and there is a subway stop close to the hotel. If visiting D.C. again I would, without a doubt, stay at The Topaz Hotel again. Highly recommend

Comfy, Cozy Gem on Quiet Street near Dupont Circle

by TripAdvisor Member Alice

We found the Topaz to be quite a find in the Dupont Circle area. The hotel is located on a charming, convenient, quiet street near both the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stops. The room was cozy and roomy for a boutique hotel. The beds were so comfy, we could have slept for a couple of days! The decor is whimsical and fun. Nice herbal tea collection in the room. A very relaxing stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The 800-number sold us a breakfast package that did not exist and the manager/staff accomodated the error. Nice hip little bar in the lobby and good music selection for most ages. AAA discount available. A Starbucks is on the corner and Luna Grill Restaurant is a good reasonable upscale diner nearby.

Most comfortable bed ever

Stayed for three nights last weekend. Pluses: Excellent location, attractive, large room and the most comfortable bed, pillows, sheets, and comforter of any hotel I've ever stayed at. Despite my complaints, I would definitely consider staying there again.

Minuses: There aren't many places for breakfast close by and there is a limited, expensive breakfast menu at the hotel. There is wireless Internet access, and they offer the use of a bridge device if you don't have a wireless card, but it took two calls and almost 2 hours for them to bring it and then it didn't work, so we had to wait for the next morning to replace it. We received someone else's bill on the second day, and there was an erroneous charge on the final bill. The accounting system seems a bit sloppy, and the people at the front desk, while pleasant, don't seem to care very much.

Worth a stay

The Topaz is a cute hotel on a lovely, tree-lined Dupont Circle side street. The location is great - just a few blocks from the Metro and very convenient to downtown DC. Our room was cozy and cheerful, very clean, with an amazingly comfy bed and a fabulous cushioned chaise to stretch out on. The in-room selection of hot teas and the Aveda bath products are nice touches. Definitely request a room on an upper floor; otherwise bar noise can be a problem. The bar itself is fine for a quick cocktail, but nothing special - I wouldn't make a night of it. Service was efficient and friendly. Do be forewarned that there is no concierge and the front desk staff is ill-informed about nearby dining options, particularly breakfast (we had to dig hard to find two good spots that are a short walk away: Kramerbooks/Afterwords Cafe, and Luna Grill). But that's a minor quibble. I'd have no hesitation in staying here again.

Be ready for a surprise!

Booked this Hotel on the strength of the reviews on Trip Advisor. Washington DC was the second stop on our trip. Washington much calmer after New York! Our Taxi pulled up at the Hotel and we were greeted by a doorman in North African style garb! My wife did wonder where I had bought her! However having booked direct with the Hotel, taking them up on their offer to match any internet site price, we were checked into a HUGE room with a wonderfully comfortable king size bed. The room was incredibly well equipped and in superb condition. We did however miss coffee in the room, only having a selection of teas! I'm sure we could have asked for some though. The bar/restaurant was not our cup of tea and we used the nearby Luna Grill for a real American breakfast- great! That said one evening we ate at The Firefly which is the restaurant in another nearby Kimpton Hotel. Not cheap by US prices but very good value by U K prices and highly recommended. A really comfortable stay and excellent staff.
