Travel Tips for Williamsburg

Here is a picture of the Jamestown settlement. It's worth the visit due to the history involved.  They restored two of the boats that were used to migrate to this settlement, and you can go aboard and tour the one shown in the above picture.

Kitchen oven and fireplace

by matcrazy1

There is an impressive, stone oven, in the kitchen of the Governor's Palace. It was used both for heating (like classical, decorative fireplaces) and mainly for cooking.

Wood was used for both heating and cooking in colonial Virginia in 18th century. There was a lot of trees in Williamsburg that time. Later on, the wood had to be transported from surrounding areas. During the Civil War, the Union troops which occupied Williamsburg, used numerous wooden fences for heating and cooking.

Mini Fan

by bugalugs

Before we travelled I kept telling myself to pack one of those mini battery operated little fans, as having been in the states at the same time the year before I knew how hot and humid it would be. Needless to say I forgot it!!!! Went into Washington before Williamsburg and they were thankfully on sale in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

Other than someone throwing a bucket of water over me the next best thing was this little fan. Here I am fanning myself :-)

If you have a car handy, and it's a nice day, take a drive down the length of the Colonial Parkway. The entire parkway is about 14 miles long, and there are stops every mile or so that give facts and stories about the area.

My hat's off to you

by b1bob about Millinery

Along Williamsburg's Duke of Gloucester Street are many shops of the period including the Millinery. The millinery is a hat shop that sells plenty of period tricornered hats. These are mass-produced and worn by the little nippers here the way they do at Disneyland. When J.D. and I visited here some years back, we figured we would have some fun and model them.
