Special Activities in Williamsburg
by michaelsmalley
My wife and I are coming to Williamsburg next May (2007) for a week and someone told me next year was a special year for Williamsburg. Like 400th anniversary or something. If this is true do you know of any special activities going on that we might want to plan our trip around or is there a good web site to check on local activities. Thanks a lot.

Hi, Mike!
I'm sorry I don't know about the 400th anniversary thing but my husband and I are seasoned Williamsburg vacationers (we go a couple of times a year).
I couldn't tell from your post whether or not you've been there before or if you and your wife are just going for this "special year" thing.
I just wanted to say that if you would like input on the "must see, must do" things while you're there, let me know via another post to this Forum (so that others who are considering going or are planning a vacation there might also benefit). If so, be sure to say what kind of things you and your wife are curious about or what kind of things you enjoy doing and I'll be more than happy to assist you.
The thing is that, if you've never been there before, it can be a bit overwhelming with all of the choices. To us, Williamsburg is heaven and we plan to live there some day.
Cheers!
Kathy

The weekend of May 11 - 13 marks the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown. There will be special programs going on that weekend, but in the months before and after, there will be additional activities. In addition to the Colonial Williamsburg website, try historyisfun.org and jamestown2007.org
Few of the activities and programs have been announced as details are being worked out. I've been to some of the programs commemorating Jamestown in recent years, and they are always interesting and informative.
Travel Tips for Williamsburg

by Venturingnow
Take a nice stroll through the lovely streets of Williamsburg, a very pleasant experience. Also walk them at night, the houses are lit up, and you can hire a guide to explain the history of the city. Walking through the town and stopping at the very old stores along the way to get an ice cream or soda from the lovely elderly who man the shops.
Flags
by chewy3326
The easiest way to tell if any attraction is open is if there's a flag in front of it. In Colonial Williamsburg, the exhibit houses close at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, but each day, many of them may not be open, or have different hours. So if you see a British flag hanging in front of the buidling, it means the building's open.
Trades interpretors
by matcrazy1
There are right many costumed trades interpreters in colonial Williamsburg. This one, on my picture, works in metal, share his techniques with children and presents his works to them.
The trades interpretors present themselves as 21st century people, but they use 18th century tools and techniques in their chosen trades. Keep in mind that some of the best craftspeople in the nation worked in the capitol of the wealthiest and most populated British colony in America - Virginia.
Tour Virginia Wineries!
by Jefie
Although the Williamsburg Winery is probably the best known winery in Virginia, there are dozens of wineries all over the state, lots of which are located within easy driving distance of Williamsburg. You can get a map of the wineries at every tourist center.
We stopped at quite a few wineries and my "coup de coeur" goes to Horton Cellars Winery, in Gordonsville. They have a great selection of wine and our host, Dennis Horton, was very helpful and friendly.
Only 1 1/2 hours from the mountains

Williamsburg is situated very conveniently about 90 minutes away from the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The education never stops as you approach Charlottesville. Up on a mountaintop, you will see a large manicured yard. This is Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. While Jefferson oversaw the building of the University of Virginia, he could keep an eye on the project through a telescope on his mountaintop home site.
Virginia wine country. The Charlottesville area has cornered the market on Virginia wine production. with over 25 vinyards within 20 miles of Charlottesville, you are never far from a wonderfully aged Cab Franc or Reisling. Go to: http://www.virginiawineguide.com/
