Travel Tips for Williamsburg

Visit the Busch Gardens...

by Venturingnow

Visit the Busch Gardens Williamsburg Theme Park. It rocks! We have one close to my old hometown, but this one is 10 times better. They had just opened a new ride or two when we arrived, so it was really fun.

Man's or woman's thing?

by matcrazy1

The staff of the Colonial Williamsburg was mostly dressed in 18th century costumes. The guys wore stockings or hose that time which is woman's and maybe some gays thing nowadays.

STOCKINGS
The man's fashionable stockings were often white in colour and were most often knit of either silk or cotton. The knitting frame (machine) was developed in the late 16th century (in Nottingham, England) which put hand knitters out of the market in 18th century. The lower classes weared colorful, linen or wool stockings.

SHOES
Fashionable low-heeled man's shoes of 18th century were made of soft leather and usually black. I got to know that they had straight soles, with no left or right, until shaped by wear's feet. Hmm... easy to produce but strange and not healthy at least at the beginning. But if the leather is soft... At least we don't have left and right socks.

Religion in Williamsburg

by matcrazy1

There is one church in Colonial Williamsburg - the Bruton Church. It's the Anglican (= Episcopal) church (Church of England). In colonial times the church was supported by taxes of its members. But the tax-payers who disliked centralized church authority, gained control of parish vestries and county courts to secure their power over religious matters.

Well, the Bruton Church, in contrast to many European Roman Catholic churches of 18th century, looked very modest. Does it prove quite different position (and budget) of both churches?

ANGLICAN CHURCH
There is no single Anglican Church. World-wide organisation of Anglican Churches (usually national churches of certain countries) is called http://www.anglicancommunion.org]the Anglican Communion. The church originates from Roman Catholic church but it doesn't recognize the primate of Roman Catholic pope. The leader of the Anglican Church is the Archbishop of Canterbury as primus inter pares or "first among equals".

Virginia Beach

by bugalugs

If you fancy a bit of relaxation or a paddle in the sea, only about an hours drive away is Virginia Beach. Miles of sand, dolphins swimming just offshire and lots to do. The boardwalk is lovely having been recently undergone reconstruction. Its where you will see people cycling, roller blading, or just strolling along.

Skates and bikes can be hired at a few places along the boardwalk.

There is a fun fair, golf courses, sailing canoeing, and also lots of evening entertainment.

Lots of cafes, restaurants to suit all pockets.

To get there, take the I-64 south, crossing the James River/Chesapeake Bat at Hampton, across to Norfolk. Then east on 264 (Virginia Beach Expressway).

The picture is of me sitting on the balcony of the hotel in Virginia Beach

Nuts and Nuts

by Sagespot about The Peanut Shop

What would a trip to the East coast be without visiting a peanut shop?

This is the one to hit!! A huge variety and lots of samples.

The counter help is always on top of your needs!

On top of peanuts, the store also features garden gnomes, signs, etc. as well as a large amount of jams, jellies, and (of course) peanut butters! Wasabi peanuts are the best!!!! I was also pleased to see that they carry the brand P.B. Loco which is a fantastic peanut butter line. Just about normal for the nuts, slightly more expensive if they are shipped out of state.
