~ Wytheville, Virginia ~
I traveled through the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia’s narrow west end on a trip with my parents and brother back in 1992. We were heading up Interstate 77, ultimately en route to Canada, when we came to the town of Wytheville. Situated at an interstate crossroads, Wytheville has a cluster of accommodations and restaurants that cater to travelers, but also has an old-fashioned main street style downtown. We spent the night at a roadside chain hotel that had views of the surrounding mountains. As we had miles to go still before reaching our real destination, we left Wytheville the next morning, heading straight through the mountains -- literally. In fact, there were two mountain tunnels we had to pass through within a short distance from Wytheville before we could make our way into West Virginia.
