hotel location & nyc bus travel

by timewaster

i am planning to use priceline to book a hotel in D.C.
Which areas should i avoid (for safety)? I am looking at dupont circle and downtown. Are both safe? I won't have a car, so need to be close to a metro stop.

has anyone taken one of the buses from NYC to D.C.?
which is better - Megabus, boltbus, etc?? or are they all the same?

thanks!

Dupont Circle area is very safe.

We stopped at Hotel Rouge; it is near its own circle, Scott Circle, just a short walk from Dupont Circle. It is a wonderful hotel (although do not take the breakfast offered there; it is too expensive for what you get, no value for the money). The neighborhood is largely residential with many embassies nearby.

Take a look at the DC pages with photos of Hotel Rouge.

Last month we stayed at the Embassy Suites, between Dupont Circle and the GW/Foggy Bottom metro. We walked back and forth in the Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom area and always felt safe.

Both the areas you mention are fine and in general you won't be more than a 5 min walk away from a METRO station. I know people who have taken the Chinatown bus, 2000 coach I think, with no problems, they seem to keep to the schedule advertised.

As mentioned, DuPont Circle area is fine. My son used to live there quite a long time ago, and that area never seems to change very much. There are tons of good restaurants and many hotels at all price ranges.

Those locations are safe. I have taken Megabus several times. It has been fine. It is clean and roomy, and has been on time for me. Can't beat the price!

Travel Tips for Washington D.C.

Momentos of the WWII

by Yaqui

When you visit the WWII Memorial you might come across some wonderful mementos of photographs, flowers, hats, and so many other things left behind in remembrance to those lost or those who have survived. The day we were there, a lovely photgraph of Jean and Abram Goldsworthy was left next to the Atlantic Pavilion.

Located on the National Mall in Washington, DC and dedicated to our 16 million men and women who served and over 400,000 who sacrificed their lives during this conflict from 1939 to 1945. The memorial was dedication was on May 29th, 2004. This memorial has another place in my heart because my mother served during this conflict as a WAC in France and England and boarded the Queen Mary for her return to Delhi, Oklahoma, her hometown.

Open All Year

Closures
December 25th. Memorial may be secured for events celebrating National Independence Day.

Here is a great site to learn more about this conflict. A very good site. The World at war, history WW 1939-1945

Old Town Trolley tours

by gosiaPL

This kind of organised tours is not my favourite, but having only two days to see Washington D.C. and wanting to see as much of it as possible, the Old Town Trolley tour seemed perfect! You see a lot as you go along, and what is more important, you can get off the trolley at any stop, see a place of your choice, and then get on board another trolley without paying any additional fee.

The trolleys come and go every half an hour. Sometimes they are packed with people and you may have to wait for the next one, but then the driver calls the office and they send another trolley within 10-15 minutes (it happened to me by the National Cathedral).
For more info check my Transportation tip. Seeing the city from the trolley rather than looking at Metro tunnels. Well, I did use the Metro twice, but riding on the trolley was more fun :-) Plus you get a better idea of where the different places are located in relation to one another, instead of getting bits of D.C. when you go in and out of the Metro. Oh, and the trolley stops right by the place you want to visit!

A Great Place For Families

by littlesam1

Washington DC is a great place to spend time with your family. There is much to see and learn. Its both educational and fun. Living so close by and also working here I have been able to spend many hours in the museums and monuments with my daughters. Here is my daughter Danielle leaving the Union Station with the Capitol in the background getting ready for a day with me in the Capitol.

You should see the FBI tour. Even if your representative can't get tickets, go stand in line. We had no problem getting on the tour. We waited in line for about an hour. We were there in June, it may be more difficult during the busier months of summer. Our special visit to the Whitehouse escorted by our Representative, Mark Green. We were able to see the Jackie Onassis Garden. Something most people don't get to see.

Take in the splendour of as many of the historical sites possible. The best I enjoyed was the Lincoln Memorial because of its interfacing of nature with art...its beautiful grounds and water scenery with the colossal statue of Abraham Lincoln, 28th?? president of the United States. My visit and stay at Georgetown University. The Univeristy has some of the most magnificent frescos painted in one of its older halls at which special ceremonies are held. It is reminiscent of paintings I have seen of the Sistine Chapel. (But of course, Michaelangelo is in a class of and on his own!)
