Historic Hotel a Stones Throw from White House

My last visit to the Hay Adams was for my sister's wedding shower. We (I say this as I helped pay for it) hosted a tea in her honor in one of the beautifully decorated rooms. The room was lovely - but very hot- it was May and the humiditiy..... The food and the service was very good.

Unique Quality: Originally designed in the 1920's as a residential hotel, the Hay-Adams has always preserved the ambiance of a distinguished private home on Lafayette Square. This classic hotel takes its name from earlier residents of its site: John Hay, private assistant to President Abraham Lincoln and later secretary of state, and Henry Adams, an acclaimed author and descendant of U.S. Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Like their homes, the Hotel has long been a favorite gathering place in the nation's capital.

The 145-room hotel features 20 suites, some with views of Lafayette Park and the White House. All guest rooms combine heritage and luxury with contemporary comfort and technology.

A Nice Hotel in a Nice Location

We had a wonderful stay at the Hay-Adams hotel. Normally we stay at the Willard-Intercontinental, however this time we tried the Hay-Adams and we're glad we did. Be sure to spend the extra for a room with a nice view, it's worth the extra money. We had all of our meals at the Lafayette Room, all of which were fabulous (you must try the Eggs Benedict!) There are a few homeless people outside near the hotel, fortunately they didn't come near or bother us when we were there so I doubt they cause much trouble. Our room rate wasn't that bad either, only about $500 per night for a room with a wonderful view, which is also less than we payed for a comparable room at the W-I. Other people have some bad reviews on the Hay-Adams, most of whom have not even stayed there to experience it for themselves.

Unique Quality: Grand lobby, attentive staff, unbeatable location

Are you crazy?

Unique Quality: On their website, they say it is the closest thing to staying in the White House without being invited by the President. Well, it is located within spitting distance of the White House. My friend Stefan is a Days Inn type of guy just like myself, but he was part of a delegation of staffers from the German Bundestag on official business, so they say a little bit of elegance was called for. As uncomfortable as I was with said elegance, I went into the Hay-Adams to meet Stefan for lunch and a little bit of touring. I don't care if I ever do get rich or famous enough to stay here, I'm staying at the Days Inn across from Fort Myer, taking the free hotel shuttle to Rosslyn, and the metro to McPherson Square if somebody in the White House ever wants to talk to me. I know the folks at Hay-Adams try hard and they were very kind to me (holding the door for me even though I wasn't their guest), but it's just not the "b1bob" kind of hotel.

A Room With A View

The Hay Adams hotel is an upscale hotel located in the heart of Washington, D.C. and hosts such things as meetings and weddings. The weddings take place on the rooftop with a backdrop of the White House, Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial.

This is done even in the winter. The hotel puts up a temporary enclosure and heaters, but it might be difficult to take pictures with the enclosure in place.

Unique Quality: The view from the rooftop is spectacular, with a historical backdrop of the White House, Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial, which seem to be just a stone's throw away.

More about Hay Adams Hotel

by DCgirl

Most hotels are pricey in the DC, Arlington and Silver Springs area so a sensible motel just outside the city is probably a good choice. But if you have the budget, stay at one the city's historical hotels like the Hay Adams just across the park from the White House.

Capital Charm

by TripAdvisor Member texastraveler79

The Hay-Adams is truly the centerstone gem of the crown of Washington, DC. It is befitting of all its awards and accolades from the design and decor to the service and staff.

Upon first glance, the hotel would seem to be very stuffy and elitist but once the car pulls up to the porte-cochere, the staff showers its guests with such exceptionally friendly white glove service, everyone feels like a dignitary. And of course, many heads of state must have been guests here because it located directly across the park from the White House.

Soaring atriums or gimicky TV fireplaces are replaced by a charming, residential scale lobby of rich fabrics and warm wood furniture. It is has beautifully undergone a major renovation that has married classic style with modern technology. You'll feel like a guest of your well-to-do best friend. The rooms are bright and cheery and exude an old-world charm. Toiletries and other in-room amenities are plentiful and thoughtful.

While you're there, a meal in the hotel's restaurant the Lafayette Room is surely not to be missed. The restaurant is flooded with light and beautiful views of the surrounding park and church across the street.

A stay here at The Hay-Adams and you'll see why it is surely one of the Leading Hotels of the World.

Breakfast near Hay Adams

by daisydoo5

Where is the best place for a reasonably priced breakfast near the Hay Adams?
Thanks!

Re: Breakfast near Hay Adams

by agent7

There are restaurants like Au Bon Pain and Starbucks around the area. Other than that there is Harriett's Family Restaurant and Heidi's Brooklyn Deli. Harriett's Family Restaurant is on 11th St. and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Heidi's Brooklyn Deli offers breakfast but is a great spot for lunch.

You are staying at the best hotel in Metro DC, rated as "The Most Excellent Hotel", United States and Canada by Conde Nast with some of the best food, and you want to go out and eat somewhere else?? Do tell...why? ~

We loved the Hay Adams and did, in fact, have several delicious breakfasts there, but after a few days of spending $22 for a couple eggs, we wanted to find something a little more reasonable.

Fair enough. Let me do a tad research and I shall come up with some good alternatives. :P ~

Re: Breakfast near Hay Adams

Here is my research for you. Probably your best bet, and almost only bet unless you want to travel the hotel circuit. I can give you plenty of wonderful restaurants for lunch and dinner, but DC really isn't a sit down breakfast crowd during the week.

"Teaism":www.teaism.com/800 Connecticut Ave., Lafayette Park/Breakfast:7:30am-11:00am. The most expensive item on their breakfast menu:Cilantro Scrambled Organic Eggs & Tea Cured Salmon: USD$9.00 They have been written up several times in the Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine here to great reviews. I've been to the one at Dupont Circle, and I enjoyed it.

"Old Ebbit Grill":675 15th. St, WDC/info@ebbitt.com/Near the White House, one of the oldest establishments here in DC.(1856)Buttermilk Pancakes(usd$10.50)w/choice of meat/Strata/Eggs Bendedict/Pumpkin French toast/Steak and eggs, etc.

Hope this helps you. I spent a lot of time on this, but now I have my foodie list built up in order to help you and others enjoy our lovely city. ~
