The Washington Dome and the Washington Monument dominate the skyline and can be used as wondeful navigation points virtually anywhere in the city. They are also impressive pieces of architecture and add a distinctive charm to the city.
The Capitol building, housing the Senate and House of Representatives, is a tremendous place to visit. The rotunda is filled with grand, historic paintings and throughout the Capitol are statues from each state representing two each of that state's most impressive statemen.
The Capitol sits at on a hill at the eastern end of what is called the Mall. This is a long, thin rectangular stretch of land bordered by the Capitol to the east, Lincloln Memorial to the west, and the Smithsonian buildings on the north and south. The Mall is a geat place to stroll and serves as a city focus for any public or holiday gathering.
This area is a wonderful tourist and local resident attraction. Museums, art, sculpture, government houses, arboritae, everything; it's great. And most if not all is free admission. (Unless you pay US taxes, then you get to see what some of your money is spent upon!! We in the US generally agree that this money is well spent.Cherry blossom time. (THANK YOU, Japan!!!) Great time to see the city. Spring is in full bloom and every turn of the head provides a special visual treat.
